Sample at the brewpub on 8/10/10. Darkest brown pour with a medium tan head. Lots of coffee in the nose along some chocolate malt. Nice, but could use more oomph. Flavor is sticky syrupy sweet. Good coffee flavor, but the sweetness is way too much. Diabetes (or Diabeetus) in a glass.

On tap at the brewery. Brownish black pour, chocolate and coffee aroma, similar taste, but really thin for the style. A lot going on, but it just doesn’t come together well.

On tap @ 21st Amendment. Poured a dark brown with ruby coming through along the edges and sporting a thin tan head. The smell is really dark coffee roast, a little bit of soy, some semi-sweet chocolate as well. Taste is right away coffee with some earthy kind of dark chocolate. Its a nice bitter roast, but there’s a grassy kind of hop character in there too. The roast totally masks the alcohol, the mouth feel is on the lower side of medium with quite a bit of fizzy carbonation for an imperial stout. A little thin, and the grassy/earthy hop character lingers and doesn’t quite match the other flavours I think.

On tap at the brewpub. Motor oil pour, thick looking and resinous, with a modest cappucino head. Nose is quite sweet, with faint coffee syrup notes. Body is far thinner than the appearance suggests, and the beer was actually a bit difficult to drink - it was WAY too sweet and imbalanced, needs time to sort itself out.

A: The pour is nearly black with a thin ring of tan foam and some streaks of lacing. S: The nose is quite nice, lots of roasted malts, burnt sugar, chocolate, and a lot of coffee. T: The coffee is dominant up front and is immediately followed by a diabetes inducing sweetness. There is some roast underneath the aforementioned flavor, but the sweetness is just too much. M: The body is maybe a little thin for an RIS. Carbonation is soft and smooth. D: I had to try to pour some IPA into this to make it drinkable as the sweetness was just far too much to handle.

Black with a creamy tan head. Strong espresso and chocolate aroma and taste but overly sweet. Finishes with a pleasant burnt coffee taste.

On tap at the brewpub. Pours with a deep brown body and a lasting tan head. Aroma is chocolate, coffee, roast, light fruit, cocoa powder and some smoke. Taste is rich, coffee, tons of fruit notes, cherry, plum, toffee, chocolate. Lasting duration. Seems like it has some lactose in it because it is quite sweet in a malted milk type of way. Soft bubbles with a dark fruit duration.

Draft. Blackish beer with a light tan head. Light roasty flavor with chocolate and bordering on espresso. Medium-plus body. Lingering espresso, light chocolate. Hops to balance with a slight pine addition.

On tap @ 21st amendment. Pours black with a brown head. Huge coffee aroma. The coffee flavors in this beer overwhelm the other flavors. Ok, but I wouldn’t try another.

On tap @ 21st Amendment poured a nearly opaque dark brown with a lasting brown head. Aromas of coffee, roasted malt, bitter chocolate and a hint of vanilla. Palate was medium bodied and smooth. Flavors of espresso, roasted malt and bitter chocolate with a smooth dry lingering bitter finish.
