Commercial Description:
Deep, mahogany color, rich malt candied, rock sugar flavors with sweet burnt currant and fig aromas. It’s strong alcohol content is tempered by a clean bitterness and complex flavors. This Barley Wine is named for Cornelius de Boom, the San Francisco Belgian Consulate General (1850 to 1851) and surprisingly the name of the alley along-side the 21st Amendment on 2nd Street.– 95 IBUs

2004 bottling Beautiful red-brown beer; good yellow-brown, slightly irregular head. Cookies nose, soft gingerbread, caramel, fresh American hops, pineapple aroma. Nearly adstringent hopstaste, takes a while to dissipate, leaving space for a sweet(er) cake/gingerbread taste: the grapey character of the hops + the dark malts lending it a kind of chocolate + raisins flavour, or even chocolatecake filled with raisins and orangezest. Pimm’s anyone? Very well-bodied, filling, chewy even, and a typical B.W. velvety smoothness: the velvet glove around the iron fist. Nice, typical US interpretation of a good B.W. It’s not an everyday drink, but once in a while , such as this can be enormously satisfying. Good one, thanks Shaun.

Draft from Toronado Barley Wine Festival. Darker amber, aroma is fairly hoppy but also has some grainy malt notes. Medium bodied, interesting idea with alcohol hidden well but my least favorite at the tasting.

On tap @ 21st Amendment poured a cloudy dark amber with a lasting am,ber head. Aromas of carmel, toffee and light citrus. Palate was medium bodied smooth and dry. Flavors of carmel, toffee, biscuit and a hint of fruitiness with a smooth dry finish.

Draft @ 21st Amendment for Strong Ale Month 2008. Poured a hazed deep amber color with an off-white head. Sweet malty aroma with some light fruity notes. The flavor was not as sweet as the aroma made me think it would be. It finished fairly dry. Medium bodied.

Tasted at the brewery during strong ale month. Why am I the only person to rate this in the past year? Deep dark amber color. Frothy cask like mixed bubbe head. Home brew like yeasty aroma from under pitching/over stressing the aroma. A little of harsh bite from the alcohol and hops. Very good, but needs lots of aging.
