COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Deep, mahogany color, rich malt candied, rock sugar flavors with sweet burnt currant and fig aromas. It’s strong alcohol content is tempered by a clean bitterness and complex flavors. This Barley Wine is named for Cornelius de Boom, the San Francisco Belgian Consulate General (1850 to 1851) and surprisingly the name of the alley along-side the 21st Amendment on 2nd Street.–

In da can! Sweet, malty, soft. Medium alcohol. Orange brown in color. How can one rate a barleywine in a can?!

THOUGHTS: One of the best barley wines I’ve ever had in a can and a nice barley wine overall. It didn’t do a good job of hiding the 11.5% ABV. Maybe with some aging the ABV might dull a little, making a better beer. The alcohol became a little too distracting. TECHNICAL: Drank 4/7/2013. Can. Poured a somewhat clear, very dark amber that was nearly brown in the glass with a small, off-white head that mostly diminished and left fair lacing. The aroma had moderate caramel; hints of chocolate; moderate pine and resin hops; light citrus hops; apple; alcohol; slight toffee; and that barley wine smell. The initial flavor was moderately sweet and lightly bitter; while the finish was heavily sweet and bitter with a fairly long duration. There was caramel, that barley wine taste, alcohol, apples, resinous hops, grape and maybe some pancake syrup. The medium to full body was oily with soft but tingly carbonation and a moderate to heavily alcoholic finish.

Transfer from BA review on 12-12-13- Poured from can into a snifter Appearance – The beer pours a murky amber color with a hint of red within. Upon pouring there is almost no head on the brew, just some traces of white foam that fade to leave no lace at all. Upon swirling the brew it looks rather thick with some sticky bits of lace left on the side of the glass. Smell – The aroma is big of a bready and biscuit malt smell mixed with lots of fruity aromas. The fruity aromas are of a big mix with aromas of orange, apple, pear, cherry and grape. Along with these smells is a bit of a woody and grassy smell as well as a moderately strong boozy smell, overall producing a rather thick and warming aroma. Taste – The taste begins with some sweeter fruit flavors of a cherry and apple nature with a decently strong bready and biscuit malt flavor. The fruit flavors dwindle as the flavor advances with the taste drying out a bit. At the same time some herbal hop flavors come to the tongue. Along with the herbal flavors, so too come some flavors of grass and earth as well as some more astringent tastes. Toward the middle and the end a decent amount of a boozy and woody alcohol tastes join the flavor profile giving a rather “hot boozed” taste to the beer. A little bit of a tannin wine like tastes come to the flavor more toward the end of the taste, and when combined with the rest, leaves a slightly off and rather hot and astringent, boozy, and malted flavor to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel – The body of the brew is quite thin for a barley wine of 11.5 % with a carbonation level that is on the higher side for a barleywine. The combination of the higher carbonation and thinner body help hide some of the more astringent flavors of the brew, but are not quite appropriate for the style, so overall I would have to say it is just average. Overall – Not really a big fan of this barleywine. The feel was a bit off and while a barleywine is expected to be on the boozey side, this one had a bit too much of a astringent and hot boozy flavors to be very enjoyable. Not one I will go to again.

"Solid barleywine if not a standout. Light orange and grapefruit hops and a good dose of Carmel malts. Slightly fruity. Medium bodied, abv covered quite well... Slight bump up from 8.4 oz can and by itself.

Pours dark red/brown with a small head. Smell is sweet malt and dark fruits with some hops. Taste follows. Hops impart quite a bit of bitterness, and the malts and fruit almost taste like candy. A little thin, but it coats the mouth, almost a buttery mouthfeel. A bit boring, but good.

UPDATED: OCT 22, 2014 Canned on 11/07/13. Pours a copper brownish red, with a slight white head. Aroma is caramel, burnt sugar, figs, and hop undertones. Noteable citrus in the background of the aroma. Flavor is candy sweetness up front (caramel, figs), vanilla, some toffee, slight booziness, and bitter hop finish that becomes increasingly hoppy. One of my favorite barleywines. Underrated in my opinion.

Pours an amber color with an off-white head. Aroma is of dark fruits with some caramel malts, floral hops and some alcohol. Flavor is strong and sweet up front with the dark fruits and caramel malts. Has a hint of warming on the finish as well.

Pretty lil can. Especially stupid coming from heavy drinking SF. Just cheapness dictating these mini cans. Stupid thick. At 11.5% with this much lingering sugar, they made syrup and added some really weak yeast. At least this was brewed in SF, unlike their full can offerings. The hops are decent. This does have a booze presence on the palate, which is easy but not good at this abv level. Sticky and cloying. Feels sloppily made. Nice hop choice.

A lot of resin and booze but this isn’t super enjoyable. Some caramel and hops. Pours cloudy orange with good head and lacing. Finishes a little sweet with some wooden bitterness. Can.
