In da can! Sweet, malty, soft. Medium alcohol. Orange brown in color. How can one rate a barleywine in a can?!

Pours a cloudy copper color. A foamy head relaxes into a bubbly lace. The nose is of candied fruit. Taste is hoppy and crisp with a sweet dry finish.

On tap at Grumpy’s NE pours a dark clear copper/brown with a small khaki head. Aroma of caramel and toffee malts with alcohol. Malt forward taste caramel and toffee, raisin, dates, hint of hops, and a hit of alcohol, overall sweet. Not bad, simple drinkable for the abv.

My Bottom Line:
This classic Barley Wine is the setting for fruity caramel malts, resinous hops and alcohol heat, all equally thriving in a rich mouthfeel.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A veil of foam covers the amber haze.
-The hop bitterness is just important enough to balance out the hefty residual sugars.
-This is not unlike Old Foghorn or many other first generation American Barley Wines.
-I’m a bit worried about how this will age in its tiny can...

Can from Lazy Dog. Pours a hazy amber with the thinnest layer of cream colored head. Aroma of dark fruit. Taste of oak, booze, and raisins.

A hazed dark amber Barleywine with a thin off white head. In aroma, sweet fruity caramel malt with vinous notes, resinous floral hops, decent. In mouth, a sweet fruity caramel malt with vinous notes, licorice, candy fruits, resinous hops. Shared with MartinT.

A- Pours a deep amber color with a big, thick, chunky head.
S- Smell is toffee, indistinct maltiness, very sweet.
T- Generic American BW, fruit, indistinct sweetness, hints of alcohol on the back end.
M- Thick with medium carbonation.
D- A decent brew but nothing to write home about. I wouldn’t repeat.

Boom, indeed. Forget the little cute can it comes in, this one hits full on from the get-go with alcohol burn. Aroma and taste give away to high ABV, faint malt backbone lies somewhere in the mix, but an overall smooth and slightly sweet experience. Nice!

Pours a dark translucent orange. Average carbonation; light head and lacing. Aromas of hops, sugar, and pine. A hoppy taste, figs and sugar at the outset, followed by bitter notes and alcohol. Malts add some sweet complexity to the mix. A very nice barleywine ale.

2.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20
[Small can] Immediately after opening, there is a big, sweet aroma that is reminiscent of Hawaiian Punch and clear gummi candies. Taste is pretty coarse and not particularly good. Alcohol really stands out, especially as the beer warms. Other than alcohol there is just barley and lingering bitterness. Not an enjoyable beer, and expensive for how much beer you get in the small can.

From the 8 fl. oz. can. Why is there such a thing as an 8 fl. oz can I ask? The pour is medium amber in color with a quick lasting off white head. The aroma is what I would expect from the style with a boastful barley malt and sweet character. Hops are laid back. The body is medium. The taste has the caramel barley sweetness from the style with a low to moderate alcohol bite. I did like this one.
