3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20 Andrew196 (1091) - Katy, USA - FEB 18, 2003
Not as overpowering as I expected considering the 9.1% ABV and 70 IBUs. I agree with the others....a very good beer, but i was expecting this beer to knock me on my ass, but instead, it was almost a super tasty session beer.

Draught at Capones on my beerunch run with Caruso. Poured a clear deep red body with a small foamy off white head. Aroma took a long time to come on and with a lot of wamth a rather fruity sweet toffee caramel aroma emerged. The body was thIck and syrupy with fizzy carbonation. Flavor was the same as the aroma, just to sickly sweet overall. Meh.

Tap at the West Coast Brewfest. Pours brown. Brown sugar aroma. Full bodied. Flavor is mostly sweet caramel, but there’s a little rough maltiness and apparently enough hop that it seems balanced. Finishes not all that sweet.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 savnac (1467) - Anchorage, Alaska, USA - MAY 10, 2012
On tap @ Humpy’s. Deep amber with a creamy beige head that leaves some lacing. Aroma is mostly caramel and citrus with some pine and butterscotch. Flavor is sweet caramel malt, some hop bitterness and a light alcohol heat. Medium to full body with average carbonation and a smooth, soft mouth feel. Nice American Barley Wine, kind of sweet but balanced out by the hops.
3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 Gachupines (494) - USA - MAY 7, 2012
Dark amber brown with a light lacing of white head. Aroma is slightly musty with notes of pine resin. Flavor is bittersweet with decent hops and a strong resinous mouthfeel. Finish is a little sticky sweet with and underlying bitterness that is a bit distracting. The body is also a bit thinner than I’d prefer. Overall, fairly decent but not an excellent barley wine.

Ruby red pour. No lacing. Thin body. Smells and tastes of raisins, plums, yeast, and spices. Texture lingers. Good flavor.

Tap. Pours dark ruby with thin, creamy off-white head; short retention and minimal lacing. Aroma is heavy dark fruit (figs, dates, strawberries, plums), cookie and caramel malt, earthy hops, and light booze. Flavor is balanced sweet malt and dark fruit esters with no noticeable hops; booze undertones throughout with a dry, semi-sweet finish. Medium body, low carbonation, and medium/high warmth.

Draft at Capone’s: Aroma of malt, hops, light pine, resin, slight diacetyl, and a hint of caramel. Poured amber in color with a medium-sized, creamy, loose, tan head that diminished but lasted throughout. Clear. Very slightly sparkling. Ok lacing. Flavor is medium sweet and light to medium bitter. Tastes of malt, caramel, hops, light pine, light resin, and some raisin. Medium body. Slightly creamy, then lightly dry texture. Average carbonation. Malt, hop, caramel, slight pine, slight resin finish is lightly dry. 10.5%ABV is completely hidden throughout.
4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20 MacMoney (406) - Espoo, FINLAND - APR 21, 2012
Draught. Pours a dark burnished copper with a large, tan head. Aroma is liquorice, dark fruits and fruit preservatives. Taste is liquorice, salty liquorice, aniseed, some dark and dried fruit, not very sweet. Palate is smooth and very full.
3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 GT2 (3942) - Washington DC, USA - APR 16, 2012
Tap at Smoke and Barrel. Isn’t this the beer a bunch of old timers rated 4.5 and higher? A clear, deep ruby pour yields a near nitro, thick, tan head of dense foam. Sheety, nitro looking lace. Super sweet strawberry and cheesy hop nose with diacetyl/butter. Taste is creamy and sticky with strawberry jam on buttered biscuit. Interesting- not my style.
