COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Monk’s Blood pays homage to the monks of Belgium’s monasteries who have been brewing some of the world’s great beer for centuries. During times of fasting, the monks subsist solely on beer, which they refer to as “liquid bread”. Beer, quite literally, is in their blood. The most sublime of the monk’s premium brews is dark like blood, rich and nourishing. 21st Amendment founders Nico Freccia and Shaun O’Sullivan traveled to Belgium to develop the recipe for this special beer, visiting small, traditional breweries in the hop fields of west Flanders, not far from the famous Trappist abbey of Westvleteren. Monk’s Blood is designed to pair beautifully with rich winter stews, creamy cheeses, unctuous desserts or just by itself, in a Belgian tulip glass, with a good book by the fire.

12 oz can. Pours a dark, yet clear reddish brown maple with a medium sized beige head. Has a ruby red tint to it. Aroma of sweet malt, light vanilla and dark fruit. Taste of watery dark fruit(dates, raisins, plums and prunes), lightly sweetened malt, toffee, vanilla and oak. A lot going on here, but the flavors just don"t stand out.

Received 12-oz can from Mystery Swap trade with scrizzz. Pours a semi-clear dark copper brown colored brew with a thick off-white head that has some nice retention and lacing. Aroma of roasted caramel malt, some vanilla, dark pitted fruits and a touch of grapefruit. Taste is medium to full bodied, roasted caramel malt, a hint of chocolate, toffee, brown sugar and dark pitted fruit. Finish is semi-sweet with some alcohol warmth and a vanilla/caramel aftertaste.

Can. A reddish brown pour with a smallish tan head. An aroma of candied sugar, raisins, Fig Newtons, some vanilla, and hints of chocolate, roasted coffee, and a light oakiness. Goes down medium to full-bodied and just a touch syrupy. The flavor starts off quite sweet with a good deal of candied sugar, dark fruits, red apples, and caramel. Vanilla extract and dark chocolate follow. Finishes with a bit of a roasted coffee bitterness. Just enough alcohol present. Wintry spices throughout. An enjoyable winter warmer.

Can:   Deep chestnut, moderate to large foamy light beige head, fairly sticky lacing.   Sweet malty nose, faint dark pitted fruit and carob.   Slight vinous quality to this.   Some donut like bready sweetness, some frosting.   Smidgen of sourness.   This doesn’t come across as a Quad.   Somewhat of a Dubbel maybe.   Overall just a swett bready maltiness that isn’t overly heavy.   Decent beverage, but not a Quad by any means.

Pours out a ruby hues brown color with a moderate off white head. Aroma is of dried dark fruit, spice and some candi sugar. Smooth mouthfeel, but a little bit light on the body for packing over 8%. Notes of dried fruit, mainly fig and raisinand light cherry, some candi sugar, and some alcohol creeps in on the finish.

OK, so am I the only one to think "a canned trappist-style beer???" Admit, so were you! Creamy light tan head about 1/4" high. Body is clear and dark ruby red color. Aroma is very slight. Pleasant flavor. Light sweetness with some hop bitterness. Average body. Clean palate. Not bad for an over all beer, but not something that stands out leagues above other trappist-style beer. Yet another good beer to add to the stable of 21st Amendment and canned beers in general!

There’s a lot in here, and the more I get into it, the more I think it’s an apt name. Pours a reddish copper, with a light tan head. Smells like a Flemish ale - something tart and cidery. Apples, mild berries, and dark fruit malts. Some cherry comes through in the flavor, and dark fruits - must be where the figs come in. No cinnamon to be spoken for... but this is multi-layered, for sure. I’m impressed - probably wouldn’t pick it up often, but this isn’t bad at all. More intriguing as you get farther through the glass.
