Monk’s Blood pays homage to the monks of Belgium’s monasteries who have been brewing some of the world’s great beer for centuries. During times of fasting, the monks subsist solely on beer, which they refer to as “liquid bread”. Beer, quite literally, is in their blood. The most sublime of the monk’s premium brews is dark like blood, rich and nourishing. 21st Amendment founders Nico Freccia and Shaun O’Sullivan traveled to Belgium to develop the recipe for this special beer, visiting small, traditional breweries in the hop fields of west Flanders, not far from the famous Trappist abbey of Westvleteren. Monk’s Blood is designed to pair beautifully with rich winter stews, creamy cheeses, unctuous desserts or just by itself, in a Belgian tulip glass, with a good book by the fire.

Sweet malty aroma with some fruit. Murky dark red brown color. Tan head. The flavor starts sweet and malty. Decent balance due to roasted malt. Some warming alcohol tones. Dried fruits in the flavor also with a yeasty finish. Tastes quite Belgian for an American brew...

My kind of brew. Mostly clear, a touch of haze, dark brownish red, beautiful. Head is there, tan. Minor lacing and retention. Dark fruit, cherries, plums in the nose along with a bit of cola. Mouth feel is medium, not super sticky or lush, but the body is there. Finishes sticky. Taste is a touch tart, then sweet, and is a bit subdued. Nice all around.

Very nicely done. A hint of smoke, with some florals and light prune. Pours dark cloudy brown with decent initial head and lacing. Bittersweet finish. Very nice, and a great package all around. Well balanced, and good justice to style. A hint of barley and oak in finish. Can from Total Wine.

Pours a dark reddish-brown with a foamy off-white head that stays a while. Nose is that dank aroma of Belgian brew with notes of prunes and dates. Taste is on the sweet side, but there’s a nice hop bite that follows the sweetness. Medium body. Lively carbonation. Tasty brew.

Can. Heavy roasted and caramel for the malt, light cooked orange for the hops, moderate dough for the yeast, with notes of date and fig. Head is small, fizzy, off-white with some slippery lacing and good legs, and is mostly diminishing. Color is murky dark brown. Flavor starts moderately sweet and lightly acidic, then the long finish is moderately sweet and lightly bitter. Palate is on the fuller side of medium, syrupy, with a fizzy carbonation and a moderately alcoholic finish. A nice smelling Belgian Strong Ale with rich flavors, but it’s just a bit cloying in the finish.

Blood from a steel can. Nice amber sunset brown body with medium tan head. Aroma of yeast and alcohol. Flavor of bread, malts, cherry and perfect amount of carbonation. Nice crisp finish.

From a 12 oz can. Pours a dark, murky, medium brown. Aroma is pumpernickel, dark fruits, roast, and molasses. Taste is similar but more robust with cherry, cloves & more cocoa. Palate is medium bodied. Decent beer but don't love the style.

12oz can. Pours deep amber with a beige head. Aroma is of wood, dark fruit, sugar, and caramel. Taste is not what I was expecting at all. It’s very woody, with lots of dark fruit, alcohol, and malt. Very sweet, with a very dry finish. Very boozy. Way more sugary than I expected.
