COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Monk’s Blood pays homage to the monks of Belgium’s monasteries who have been brewing some of the world’s great beer for centuries. During times of fasting, the monks subsist solely on beer, which they refer to as “liquid bread”. Beer, quite literally, is in their blood. The most sublime of the monk’s premium brews is dark like blood, rich and nourishing. 21st Amendment founders Nico Freccia and Shaun O’Sullivan traveled to Belgium to develop the recipe for this special beer, visiting small, traditional breweries in the hop fields of west Flanders, not far from the famous Trappist abbey of Westvleteren. Monk’s Blood is designed to pair beautifully with rich winter stews, creamy cheeses, unctuous desserts or just by itself, in a Belgian tulip glass, with a good book by the fire.

Sweet malty aroma with some fruit. Murky dark red brown color. Tan head. The flavor starts sweet and malty. Decent balance due to roasted malt. Some warming alcohol tones. Dried fruits in the flavor also with a yeasty finish. Tastes quite Belgian for an American brew...

Can. Nice, brown beefy dubbel type thing, candi sugar sweetness, bit of bitterness, caramel light spice. Very nice.

From a can, 6 months after canning. Pours a nice mahogany with head fading to a film leaving minor lacing. Aroma is cherry, vanilla, fig, oak, brown sugar. Sweet and interesting. Taste is raisin, toffee, dark fruit, more sweetness balanced by cherry tart at the end. You expect it to be cloying at some point but it never gets there. A more holiday feel as it warms. I donít get much Belgian from this, but thatís OK by me. This was surprisingly tasty.

Can from the can from a box aroma. A rich malty nose with a chewy aroma. Moderate pepper notes that continue to come through in the flavor. Slightly medicinal, but I think that is just me growing tired of Belgian style beers. Overall pretty drinkable but would like more esters and less phenols.

Canned. Pours a hazelnut brown color with a light head. Aroma is cherries, vanilla, some woodiness to it. Flavor is similar. Cherries, some vanilla, a distinct spiciness at the end of it. It is not cinnamon but it could be that or some other spice. Very drinkable and enjoyable.

Appearance: Dark black body with a very light khaki head that starts fluffy and fades to a few fluffy islands and a ring. Lots of large and small bubbles all over the glass. Aroma: I pick up the scent of oak, some pepper, and some earthy mossy woodsy scent. Taste: The taste is an interesting take on a Belgian Strong Dark Ale. Right up front I get a woody flavor along with a very light pine and some spicy peppery flavor to it. The can says "Belgian-style ale brewed with cinnamon, vanilla, oak chips and dried figs." I donít notice these flavors with the exception of the oak chips and possibly the cinnamon (the spicy flavor). Overall: It is a really good tasting beer but it doesnít have the standard Belgian style flavors (dates, plums, raisins, figs, banana, clove, etc). It is a lot more woody and spicy than I would normally expect, but it works very well for this beer. The key here is that it is an enjoyable beer to drink. I would pick it up again. I would add (again) that a person should be cautious about buying it based on the text on the can stating the ingredients used. It isnít a sweet tasting beer (to me) but all things are subject to the palate of the individual.

Poured from can to glass. Deep amber red hue with thick creamy tan head that held. Aroma is malt, raisins, figs, cola, oak, leather, banana, clove. Mouthfeel is nice with a full body and soft carbonation. Taste is sweet throughout with a faint astringent bitterness in the following and a slight dry spiciness in the finish. Overall this is a nice play on the Trappist style brew. Iím not getting much cinnamon on the nose however it is there in the back of my throat in the finish. A good play on figs.

I thought this one would be a foamer given the fact that I cracked open the can, got out my glass and saw foam almost overflowing the lip of the can before I could pour. Surprisingly, the carbonation is reasonable and the head wasnít very long lasting. Sweet. Dark stone fruit. Slight overripe sourness in the finish.

A cola-like pour with a foamy lid that reminded me of Swiss cheese. The label is pretty drab. Aroma of iron, fresh paint, caramel, cola, malt, and lightly tangy hops. The taste is impressive - brown bread, cola, black cherry, cinnamon, and oak. It is nicely balanced, and has a dash of acidity in it. Very tasty.

Expectation: I figure this will lead to a good experience
Motivation: So far Iíve enjoyed most 21st Amendment beers Iíve had
Hardware: 12oz can (canned on 3/3/14) into Le Duvel
Nose: Raisins (figs) and Belgian sugars
sip: booze, white wine (vanilla and oak chips) and I canít detect cinnamon even though I usually can
Taste: sweet
Misc: light to medium body
Conclusion: kind of drinks like the champagne of cough syrups, score says it all

The 12 oz can poured clear, dark red-brown with a semi-durable tan head that left fine sticky lacing. Feel: Full body with excellent, soft carbonation. Cinnamon, vanilla and figs in the nose. Cinnamon, vanilla and figs dominate the flavor which also has a touch of oak and a malt base. Moderately spicy. About equal balance of bitter and sweet. O: tasty and complex.
