Monk’s Blood pays homage to the monks of Belgium’s monasteries who have been brewing some of the world’s great beer for centuries. During times of fasting, the monks subsist solely on beer, which they refer to as “liquid bread”. Beer, quite literally, is in their blood. The most sublime of the monk’s premium brews is dark like blood, rich and nourishing. 21st Amendment founders Nico Freccia and Shaun O’Sullivan traveled to Belgium to develop the recipe for this special beer, visiting small, traditional breweries in the hop fields of west Flanders, not far from the famous Trappist abbey of Westvleteren. Monk’s Blood is designed to pair beautifully with rich winter stews, creamy cheeses, unctuous desserts or just by itself, in a Belgian tulip glass, with a good book by the fire.

From can dated 03/05/12, pours color of brown and red with nice head and light white lacing, medium carbonation, smells of malt, sugary, honey, resin and alcohol. Taste of malt. honey, raisin, fruits, and sweet oak taste with dry finish and some alcohol slight warming effect not to heavy, nice unique beer.

Pours a purplish-brown from a can. Aroma is a fruity caramel, flavor makes it more of a fig or plum pudding. Can’t taste the cinnamon noted on the can. Round mouthfeel, alcohol burn towards the end but not much. Good beer.

Pours a half finger of head on a dark straw body. The aroma is clean dark fruits and grains. Nice. The taste has a mild caramel sweetness start, metallic bitter middle, ripe fruit finish. The texture is thicker with low carbonation. Enjoyable.

2015/03/13 - Pours a dark hazy brown/amber colour, with a soapy, khaki head that quickly dissipates. No lacing. Aroma is brown sugar, yeast, dough, mild oak, dates and booze. Taste is vanilla, spices, oak, figs, dates, figs and alcohol. Mouthfeel is medium and slightly oily with mild carbonation and a sweet, mildly warming finish. 10-month old can. Deep red-chestnut pour. Nose is fruity, dark fruit, cinnamon, figs. Taste follows the nose. Not getting much wood or vanilla. Very tasty, fruity, yeasty Belgian ale.

Pours deep chestnut brown with a ring of off-white foam. Aroma is berries, vinous (sangria?), cinnamon, dried fruit, vanilla, and bread. Taste is vanilla, bread, dried fig, Dr. Pepper fruitiness, hint of oak, toffee, and warm spice. Med=full body, nice substantial mouthfeel. Delicious. Maybe a tad strong on the vanilla.

Backlog rating. Can at Caspar tasting at Chriso’s, London. It pours a dark copper color with a small off-white head. Aroma sweet and yeasty, ripe fruits, caramel, dough, pepper, plums. Taste is similarly sweet and yeasty, lightly boozy, with more dried fruits and caramel. Decent overall

Pours a clear deep brown/red with small khaki head. Aroma is sweet with sugar, cherry, plum, caramel, and licorice. Taste followed the nose pretty closely. I’d consider this more of a red ale than a Belgian Strong. It just tasted too sweet to me. Canned in March, so maybe the age had something to do with it. Not bad and I didn’t mind it, just really sweet for me.

Had a few cans of this sitting in the cellar for about 1.5 years. Surprisingly, age is just fine with this beer (at least for this amount of time) - fig, malt, booze, Belgian spice notes. A touch oxidized and a little mineraly on the finish. Nice.
