Monk’s Blood pays homage to the monks of Belgium’s monasteries who have been brewing some of the world’s great beer for centuries. During times of fasting, the monks subsist solely on beer, which they refer to as “liquid bread”. Beer, quite literally, is in their blood. The most sublime of the monk’s premium brews is dark like blood, rich and nourishing. 21st Amendment founders Nico Freccia and Shaun O’Sullivan traveled to Belgium to develop the recipe for this special beer, visiting small, traditional breweries in the hop fields of west Flanders, not far from the famous Trappist abbey of Westvleteren. Monk’s Blood is designed to pair beautifully with rich winter stews, creamy cheeses, unctuous desserts or just by itself, in a Belgian tulip glass, with a good book by the fire.

Nice spiced aroma, with hints of dark fruit and caramel. Pours a reddish-brown, with just a dusting of foam. This beer is on the sweeter side, with a touch of roast in the finish. A bit of stickiness to the mouthfeel, but a quite tasty beer, especially out of a can.

Strong dark fruity plum aroma with raisin and chocolate, slight roastiness, caramel/toffee, bready. ~Pours a reddish brown color with wispy off white head. ~Very rich malty flavor, chocolate, melanoidins, toffee, caramel, prune and raisin, dark cherry, pepper. ~Full bodied, with low CO2, somewhat clean sugary finish with peppery sugary spice lingering. ~Delicious brew. This is my 1000th rating, glad I picked this beer. Has pretty much everything I look for in a dark strong.

Opaque mahogany colored body is topped by a creamy khaki head. Vanilla, oak, fig and spice aromas make for a beautiful bouquet. Flavors include cinnamon, vanilla, dried dark fruits and a bit of booziness. Medium bodied, very flavorful and enjoyable. Delicious, excellent brew.

Monk's blood! The label says cinnamon, vanilla, oak chips and dried figs. Yum? I can really taste the vanilla! Sort of a dubbel meets root beer. Very drinkable! ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

From a can. Medium brown with a good beige head. Aroma is raisins, brown sugar, fig, vanilla, honey. Full bodied, creamy mouthfeel, sweet and fruity on the palate with a little balancing bitterness on the finish. Flavours are raisins, brown sugar, figs, dates, malt. Great Belgian character.

Can. Pours reddish brown. Faint fruit aroma. Plummy flavor with maybe a little chocolate and some dark fruit flavor. Semi sour dark fruit finish. This wasn’t really what I expected. Interesting, different. It was alright.

Transfer from BA review on 4-28-12- Poured from can into Chimay glass Appearance – Pours a deep reddish brown color with a solid one finger light brown head. The head faded within a few minutes giving way to some nice lacing. Smell – Yeast and banana aromas are the heaviest in the nose. There are many other very nice smells mixed with these however. Dark and tropical fruits aromas of cherries, raisin, fig , and mango are in there. There is also a good dose of malty breadiness which when mixed with the yeast and fruit and a bit of boozy aroma, create a very robust and pleasing smell. Taste – A roasty malt backbone is present throughout the taste experience and is much heavier in the taste then was depicted in the nose. Up front some of the yeast flavors are present, but these begin to fade toward the middle. Some darker fruit flavors start developing as the yeastiness begins to fade. The fruit flavors are mainly raisin and fig in nature without a strong cherry presence even though this aroma was the strongest of the fruits. Toward the end a little bit of the yeast works its way back into the taste and is mixed with a much stronger alcohol flavor then would have been anticipated from the nose. These leave a somewhat unbalanced boozy taste left on the tongue at the end. Mouthfeel – The body is a bit higher then medium in thickness/creaminess and the carbonation level is right around average. The body seems a bit light to me and would likely be better with some more chewiness. Overall – While it had a very nice look and wonderful aroma, it was a bit lacking in mouthfeel and taste. It was to boozy at the end and the darker fruit flavors that I was expecting to experience were rather light in comparison to a more roasty malt flavor. Overall it is an OK Belgian dark, but not one to look for with any real frequency.

Pours a cloudy orangish brown with little head and lacing. Butterscotch, maple syrup, candied sugar, and sweet malts on the nose. Medium bodied, slightly creamy mouthfeel. Malts, molasses, vanilla, and dark tropical fruit. A really nice dark Belgian-like ale.
