COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Monk’s Blood pays homage to the monks of Belgium’s monasteries who have been brewing some of the world’s great beer for centuries. During times of fasting, the monks subsist solely on beer, which they refer to as “liquid bread”. Beer, quite literally, is in their blood. The most sublime of the monk’s premium brews is dark like blood, rich and nourishing. 21st Amendment founders Nico Freccia and Shaun O’Sullivan traveled to Belgium to develop the recipe for this special beer, visiting small, traditional breweries in the hop fields of west Flanders, not far from the famous Trappist abbey of Westvleteren. Monk’s Blood is designed to pair beautifully with rich winter stews, creamy cheeses, unctuous desserts or just by itself, in a Belgian tulip glass, with a good book by the fire.

Sweet and fruity malt aroma with a hint of yeast in the background. Deep brown and amber color. Medium carbonated with a light brown head. Wine like characteristics. A little sweet and yeasty. Very interesting. Very drinkable and almost no bitterness or hop presence. Awesome beer!

Pours a dark reddish-brown with a foamy off-white head that stays a while. Nose is that dank aroma of Belgian brew with notes of prunes and dates. Taste is on the sweet side, but there’s a nice hop bite that follows the sweetness. Medium body. Lively carbonation. Tasty brew.

glennmastrange (2413) - hobe sound, Florida, USA - MAY 28, 2015
Can. Heavy roasted and caramel for the malt, light cooked orange for the hops, moderate dough for the yeast, with notes of date and fig. Head is small, fizzy, off-white with some slippery lacing and good legs, and is mostly diminishing. Color is murky dark brown. Flavor starts moderately sweet and lightly acidic, then the long finish is moderately sweet and lightly bitter. Palate is on the fuller side of medium, syrupy, with a fizzy carbonation and a moderately alcoholic finish. A nice smelling Belgian Strong Ale with rich flavors, but it’s just a bit cloying in the finish.

Can: Pours deep red, with a beige ring. Berry, dark fruit, yeast aroma. Cherry, dark bread, dark fruit, vanilla,... A nice little cinnamon sting during the finish. Really good.

Blood from a steel can. Nice amber sunset brown body with medium tan head. Aroma of yeast and alcohol. Flavor of bread, malts, cherry and perfect amount of carbonation. Nice crisp finish.

From a 12 oz can. Pours a dark, murky, medium brown. Aroma is pumpernickel, dark fruits, roast, and molasses. Taste is similar but more robust with cherry, cloves & more cocoa. Palate is medium bodied. Decent beer but don't love the style.

12oz can. Pours deep amber with a beige head. Aroma is of wood, dark fruit, sugar, and caramel. Taste is not what I was expecting at all. It’s very woody, with lots of dark fruit, alcohol, and malt. Very sweet, with a very dry finish. Very boozy. Way more sugary than I expected.

Can into Trappist glass, deep brown-amber color with tan head. Aroma notes of nuttiness, caramel, vanilla, oak, dark dried fruits (figs, some plum) and light spices. Taste adds cinnamon, heavy dark bread, brown sugar, fruity candy, wood, cocoa and fruity yeastiness. Medium body, moderate carbonation, creamy, sticky with yeasty fruity roast finish. A pretty nice flavored dark Belgian.

Deep amber almost brown color with an off white head & minimal lacing. Sweet and fruity aroma. Taste follows nose with a sweet dark fruit flavor. Refreshing beer overall with good flavor and palate.
