You might not expect a Saison in winter. But the enemy didn’t expect Washington to cross the icy Delaware, either. Expectations be damned, we say. We’re sneaking up on winter with a boatload of bravado and this Belgian-style farmhouse ale. Dry hopped with whole organic cardamom pods, our Saison has an assertive spiciness. In your face, winter.

Pour from a can; straw color, slightly hazy, big white head. Bready sweet aroma with a hint of sour and almonds (i.e., mild nutty aroma). With the first sip the initial sensation is the carbonation, which quickly gives way to a pleasant lemony sourness. The finish begins with a hint of hopyness and quickly changes to dried sour fruits. Coats the mouth and results in a very lingering finish (for me that was 5+ minutes). Very nice saison.

Pours straw, somewhat hazy. Lots of head that quickly dissipates. Smells of fruity esters and yeast. Belgianish. Tastes of pale malts and roasted wheat. Yes I think there is wheat in this. Tropical fruit, apple and a dry finish. Sediment at the bottom of my glass. Refreshing and tasty beer.

One of the biggest and frothiest heads I’ve ever seen coming from a canned beer which has been sitting calmly in my fridge for several weeks. Lots of lace left as head collapses. Clear light golden body. Only slightv spicy aroma. Pleasant but wish it was stronger. Great flavors of spice and perhaps some wheat(?). I don’t drink farmhouse ales too often. But, this one was enjoyable.

Clear golden with a thin white head. Aroma is very slight spice with notes of clove. Mildly spiced with little to no body and an overall thin mouthfeel. Lacks the peppery notes that would help brighten it up. Wife: 2.8

1/31/2014: 21st Amendment Sneak Attack Saison... I was really hoping that the cardamom would come through more, bit it didn’t, so the spice was more like the typical generic Belgian spice; lots of yeast in the nose; fails to deliver anything great in the flavor. Draught sample at Whole Foods in Mason, Ohio. Rating #166 for this beer.

2013 can at Tasty Burger, 1/16/14
Foamy, off-white head tops a clear deep bronze body. Moderate to low retention.
Thankfully it’s not a spicebomb in the nose, though nor is it particularly farmhousey. Sweet malts are somewhat tempered by the spices and light yeast phenols. Medium strength of aroma.
Bready, lightly citrusy and with pale malt sweetness that is moderately well-attenuated, the flavor is a pretty straightforward American-style saison, replete with an authentic and enjoyable cardamom flavor that isnt overdone. Aside from that, though, complexity is pretty low, with just some peppery phenols and a bit of hop bitterness. Moderate carbonation, lightly watery, soft-textured body with no alcohol noted.

Can. Pours a cloudy yellow with thick white head that lasts awhile leaving spotty lacing. The aroma is strong yeast, clove, and banana. Medium mouthfeel with light citrus and clove with light dry finish. Good.

Pours light yellow/gold with a fizzy white head. Aromas of fresh grain, spice, and yeasty esters. Flavor is snappy and bubbly. Grain, lemon, spice, and a dry finish. Nice stuff
