You might not expect a Saison in winter. But the enemy didn’t expect Washington to cross the icy Delaware, either. Expectations be damned, we say. We’re sneaking up on winter with a boatload of bravado and this Belgian-style farmhouse ale. Dry hopped with whole organic cardamom pods, our Saison has an assertive spiciness. In your face, winter.

Can from PD. Hazy lemon yellow pour with a medium white head fading to a short rim with good retention and leaving moderate lace. Nose is light funk, Belgian yeast and malt - like a dry Belgian Golden. Medium-light body, fine carbonation. Spicy (though the cardamom doesn’t stand out), yeasty and quite tasty, with a nice balance of light Belgian malt, peppery hops, funk and spices. Finish is short, clean and balanced. Dunno if I’d call it sessionable at over 6%, but it’s certainly a very accessible saison.

The Saison continues to rise. 2013 will be the year of the Saison. This one is a Belgian style Farmhouse Ale. very different than the French variety. More unusual spices, but still very appealing.

This beer has a yeasty bread aroma. It pours a cloudy light yellow with a very think head. It is a little bitter but has a little bite which almost tastes a bit like black pepper. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

12 oz. can from Dutch’s. Pours a hazy yellow golden color with a large soda like white head that disappears rather quickly. The aroma is Belgian yeast, cardamom, ginger, sweet notes, grass, with some light orange zest. The flavor is biscuity malts, yeast, cardamom, ginger, light orange zest and grassy. Not much in the way of farmhouse like many saisons. This is also a bit watery. Worth taking a shot at this one at least once.

12oz can, canned on 12/16/12. Freakin’ great can art, even by 21st Amendment standards. Pours a mildly hazy yellow whitish color. Good big white head. Decent lace. Belgian yeasty esters, but mostly the cardamom spice is obvious in the nose. It’s pretty nice. Lemon peel, creme flavors. Zesty sweet taste. Medium body. Carbonation is smooth but a bit pronounced. Nice spicy cardamom and belgian yeast aftertaste. Decent, enjoyable saison, seems like it works for the winter season - a good change of pace from the heavy darker winter spices. It’s also cool to see an affordable option for saison in the 12oz format besides Ommegang’s Hennepin, and this one even comes in a badass-looking can! I’m not sure that it beats Hennepin’s quality, but it soundly trumps it’s price: $1.67 for this vs. $2.37 for Hennepin. A nice pick if you want to add a saison to your mixer-sixer.

Appearance: Pours a yellow cloud.
Aroma: Aroma of spice, some yeast.
Taste: Some spice but not overbearing, yeasty, little bitterness..
    Palate:Medium light body.

Summary: I thought this was just okay for a saison. I have two more cans to confirm my rating. Surprised I’m the 6th rater of this beer.

Getting a big lemon verbena aroma but its probably the cardamom, mom. It's on the tongue too. Plus a ginger thing going on. Pretty crisp finish. Wish I could remember the French beer it reminds me of that I bought once at Rikkers Liquors in SF. Speaking of SF this gets points for the graphic's "Endless SOMA." ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Can. Pours a clear pale yellow with minimal white head. Aroma of Belgian yeasts and cardamom. Taste is a bit sour up front, light to medium body, with a tiny bit of bitterness and spiciness in the finish. Pretty good.

Yellow, with a thin white head, and a buzzy gingery aroma, which I guess must be cardamom. Taste is the same with a peculiar pear ester that fades into a very herbal bitterness. $2/12oz

It's a perfectly serviceable beer, perhaps mislabeled? It tastes like a Belgian pale ale more than a saison, I'm not getting any farmhouse funk. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
