2.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20
Reviewed 1/16/2013. 12 oz can into a Samuel Smith pint glass.
A: Pours a golden yellow color thatís seemingly clear at first. Some exposure to light will reveal a hazier body. The head is a one finger white color. Itís kind of disappointing by style standards, as it doesnít have the supreme retention or lacing qualities I expect.
S: Well spiced. And I really mean well spiced. Aside from the strong lemongrass quality the aroma provides, many spices - such as ginger, nutmeg, cinnamon, and the advertised cardamom - come through in an almost explosive manner. If there any such thing as a winter saison, this would be it.
T: There is a lot of lemon flavor in general, with a finish that evokes not only cardamom, but both gingerbread cookies and fresh cut grass as well. Complexity is muted at best. Works as simple refreshment quite well. Letís be honest, though, itís not a great saison.
M: A bit on the syrupy side - which is usually a deal breaker in a saison. Iím almost content to blame the slight undercarbonation (though it seems to perk up as the wet finish builds up), but Iím thinking its caused by the general sweetness. The texture features excellent initial crispness, but that syrupy, vaguely sweet linger comes close to ruining things completely. Dryness tries to accumulate past the aftertaste to no avail.
O: Those looking for a complex, thought evoking saison, look elsewhere. Those looking for a simple thirst quenching beer in a can, give it a try. I have to dock points for not being a good representation of the style, but as a regular íspiced beerí, itís solid.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Hazy, yellow with a white head. The aroma has floral and lightly spicy hops with a touch of lemon. It has a light, somewhat watery body with average carbonation. The taste is bittersweet with a dry finish.

3.2 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
Pours a very cloudy, dark straw color with golden yellow edges and a 2.5 finger, pillowy white head that very slowly settles into a thick, lasting cap/ring. Very good retention with sporadic spotty lacing coating the glass on the way down.
Earthy, musty aroma with peppery spice, bready yeast, ester-y light fruit and funky yeast. Hints of pepper, clove and cardamom along with some bread, banana and bubblegum. This is countered by funky farmhouse yeast along with a bit of cider and pear sweetness. I was expecting more cardamom, spice and farmhouse funk in the nose but the aroma is somewhat pedestrian.
Full bodied with a stronger spice presence than the aroma suggests. Some musty, peppery funk with bready yeast, slightly wild farmhouse yeast and bread along with sweeter light fruit flavor toward the finish. Spicy clove, white pepper, ginger, allspice and cardamom up front followed by hints of sourdough bread, banana, apple and pear. The saison/farmhouse character is still a little weaker than I prefer but the cardamom really stands out on the palate especially after it warms up a bit. An interesting take on the style with interesting Indian spices. Not the most complex beer but the spices are refreshing and the ABV in nicely masked making this beer pretty easy to drink.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
(can - 12 oz) Hazy light gold with a fizzy white head. Tons of cardamom and spice in the aroma. Flavor matches with the abundance of cardamom but also gives a nice dry and lightly funky tart finish.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
12oz can from Brewmasters in Wilson. Golden hue, murky clarity with mostly lasting white fizzy head. Virtually no lacing. Aromas of spice, wheat, grass, sun. Light floral spice up front with more of a lemon and spice finish. Not to shabby.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Hazy yellow, with a big white head. Smells corny, grassy, grainy, with a spicy note or two. Taste is toasty, spicy, some, I dunno, basil? Maybe? Not really sure. Some sort of herbal flavor. I liked it...

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
A: Dark gold color with a firm foamy white head.
N: Big cardamom, peppercorn, cracker, white wine grape, husk, peppercorn, lemon, and grass.
T: A light breadiness with a hint of citrus. Good proportion.
M: Lighter body, creamy soft carbonation, no alcohol presence.
O: A light saison thatís an easy drinker. Not as rounded or complex as Logsdonís (for an American version) but this is one I would return to, for sure.

Just nothing super special about this beer...light, refreshing, and great for a hot AZ summer. Dry straw pour with a tightly packed white head and ample carbonation. Spicy, citrusy, peppery, and grassy.
