COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
You might not expect a Saison in winter. But the enemy didnít expect Washington to cross the icy Delaware, either. Expectations be damned, we say. Weíre sneaking up on winter with a boatload of bravado and this Belgian-style farmhouse ale. Dry hopped with whole organic cardamom pods, our Saison has an assertive spiciness. In your face, winter.

Reviewed 1/16/2013. 12 oz can into a Samuel Smith pint glass. A: Pours a golden yellow color thatís seemingly clear at first. Some exposure to light will reveal a hazier body. The head is a one finger white color. Itís kind of disappointing by style standards, as it doesnít have the supreme retention or lacing qualities I expect. S: Well spiced. And I really mean well spiced. Aside from the strong lemongrass quality the aroma provides, many spices - such as ginger, nutmeg, cinnamon, and the advertised cardamom - come through in an almost explosive manner. If there any such thing as a winter saison, this would be it. T: There is a lot of lemon flavor in general, with a finish that evokes not only cardamom, but both gingerbread cookies and fresh cut grass as well. Complexity is muted at best. Works as simple refreshment quite well. Letís be honest, though, itís not a great saison. M: A bit on the syrupy side - which is usually a deal breaker in a saison. Iím almost content to blame the slight undercarbonation (though it seems to perk up as the wet finish builds up), but Iím thinking its caused by the general sweetness. The texture features excellent initial crispness, but that syrupy, vaguely sweet linger comes close to ruining things completely. Dryness tries to accumulate past the aftertaste to no avail. O: Those looking for a complex, thought evoking saison, look elsewhere. Those looking for a simple thirst quenching beer in a can, give it a try. I have to dock points for not being a good representation of the style, but as a regular íspiced beerí, itís solid.

(can - 12 oz) Hazy light gold with a fizzy white head. Tons of cardamom and spice in the aroma. Flavor matches with the abundance of cardamom but also gives a nice dry and lightly funky tart finish.

12oz can from Brewmasters in Wilson. Golden hue, murky clarity with mostly lasting white fizzy head. Virtually no lacing. Aromas of spice, wheat, grass, sun. Light floral spice up front with more of a lemon and spice finish. Not to shabby.

Hazy yellow, with a big white head. Smells corny, grassy, grainy, with a spicy note or two. Taste is toasty, spicy, some, I dunno, basil? Maybe? Not really sure. Some sort of herbal flavor. I liked it...

Nice aromas of cardamom and allspice. Medium body. Smooth all the way through. A little wheat character. Pairs well with Asian and middle eastern food.

Can. A: Dark gold color with a firm foamy white head. N: Big cardamom, peppercorn, cracker, white wine grape, husk, peppercorn, lemon, and grass. T: A light breadiness with a hint of citrus. Good proportion. M: Lighter body, creamy soft carbonation, no alcohol presence. O: A light saison thatís an easy drinker. Not as rounded or complex as Logsdonís (for an American version) but this is one I would return to, for sure.

Just nothing super special about this beer...light, refreshing, and great for a hot AZ summer. Dry straw pour with a tightly packed white head and ample carbonation. Spicy, citrusy, peppery, and grassy.

Draft sample at Cherry Blossom Beer & Wine fest, cloudy golden color with white head. Aroma notes of funky yeast, cardamom, lemon and earthiness. Taste adds bread, pepper and herbal notes. Light body, moderate carbonation, crisp with herbal/citrus finish. Nice light saison.

Pour on tap at Red Wagon, hazy golden-yellow pour with white head, aroma brought notes of grass, bread, some bubblegum, hints of wheat into a bit of white fruits, some pepper. Taste was a mix of pepper, grass, bread, hints of biscuit into a bit of white fruit, bubblegum, finishing fairly sweet, slightly spicy.

Athens, Ga. - Five Points Bottle Shop - Atlanta Hwy. - 12 oz can. Light-medium gold pour, slightly sparkling, initial white bubbly head that fades away after a while. Aroma has some lemony sourness to it, a hint of of yeast. Flavor has some lemony citrus notes, a touch of cake mix, some coriander spiciness, a touch of cloves. Mouthfeel has a decent thickness to it. Not a huge fan.
