2.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20
Reviewed 1/16/2013. 12 oz can into a Samuel Smith pint glass.
A: Pours a golden yellow color that’s seemingly clear at first. Some exposure to light will reveal a hazier body. The head is a one finger white color. It’s kind of disappointing by style standards, as it doesn’t have the supreme retention or lacing qualities I expect.
S: Well spiced. And I really mean well spiced. Aside from the strong lemongrass quality the aroma provides, many spices - such as ginger, nutmeg, cinnamon, and the advertised cardamom - come through in an almost explosive manner. If there any such thing as a winter saison, this would be it.
T: There is a lot of lemon flavor in general, with a finish that evokes not only cardamom, but both gingerbread cookies and fresh cut grass as well. Complexity is muted at best. Works as simple refreshment quite well. Let’s be honest, though, it’s not a great saison.
M: A bit on the syrupy side - which is usually a deal breaker in a saison. I’m almost content to blame the slight undercarbonation (though it seems to perk up as the wet finish builds up), but I’m thinking its caused by the general sweetness. The texture features excellent initial crispness, but that syrupy, vaguely sweet linger comes close to ruining things completely. Dryness tries to accumulate past the aftertaste to no avail.
O: Those looking for a complex, thought evoking saison, look elsewhere. Those looking for a simple thirst quenching beer in a can, give it a try. I have to dock points for not being a good representation of the style, but as a regular ’spiced beer’, it’s solid.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Poured from the can into a pint glass at the World of Beer in Pooler, GA. I am not a huge fan of Saisons, but I did find this one really lacking in the taste department. I normally love 21st Amendment beers.

Pepper, lemon, and some spices on the nose. Pale hazy gold color with a white head. Sweet up front, lemon and citrus blended with pepper and spices....mostly cloves. Sweetness fades quickly, some pilsner like qualities. Bitterness is dry and peppery, but balances sweetness well. Finish is mostly bitter, a bit uneven. O.k.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Poured from the 12oz can into a shaker glass. Pale straw color with a white head. Aroma is wheat and yeast. Flavor is similar with wheat, some yeasty notes, and some spiciness towards the finish. Medium bodied. Decent but the spice note has a bit of an odd flavor.

Tap. Moderate aromas all around with grain and bread for the malt, grass and lemon peel for the hops, musty basement, with faint spice in the background. Head is large, frothy, white with fair lacing and and is mostly diminishing. Color is clear, light amber. Flavor starts faintly sweet and lightly acidic, then finishes lightly acidic and lightly to moderately bitter. Palate is light to medium, watery, with a lively carbonation. Smells nice, tastes okay, but still a drinkable Saison.

Jaune pâle avec un grand col blanc. L’arôme des épices et houblon florale. En bouche c’est très facile à boire, avec des épices sec et d’houblon florale qui met la bière en équilibre sans le rendre trop amer pour le style.
