2.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20
Reviewed 1/16/2013. 12 oz can into a Samuel Smith pint glass.
A: Pours a golden yellow color thatís seemingly clear at first. Some exposure to light will reveal a hazier body. The head is a one finger white color. Itís kind of disappointing by style standards, as it doesnít have the supreme retention or lacing qualities I expect.
S: Well spiced. And I really mean well spiced. Aside from the strong lemongrass quality the aroma provides, many spices - such as ginger, nutmeg, cinnamon, and the advertised cardamom - come through in an almost explosive manner. If there any such thing as a winter saison, this would be it.
T: There is a lot of lemon flavor in general, with a finish that evokes not only cardamom, but both gingerbread cookies and fresh cut grass as well. Complexity is muted at best. Works as simple refreshment quite well. Letís be honest, though, itís not a great saison.
M: A bit on the syrupy side - which is usually a deal breaker in a saison. Iím almost content to blame the slight undercarbonation (though it seems to perk up as the wet finish builds up), but Iím thinking its caused by the general sweetness. The texture features excellent initial crispness, but that syrupy, vaguely sweet linger comes close to ruining things completely. Dryness tries to accumulate past the aftertaste to no avail.
O: Those looking for a complex, thought evoking saison, look elsewhere. Those looking for a simple thirst quenching beer in a can, give it a try. I have to dock points for not being a good representation of the style, but as a regular íspiced beerí, itís solid.

3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
12oz can. Pours a clear light golden yellow color with a frothy white head that dissipates instantly into a ring. Huge cardamom and cinnamon notes, with some light hay in the aroma, along with some cracker. Taste of cardamom and cinnamon notes up front with some lemon and pilsner malt from the middle to the finish. Some saltiness on the finish that really lingers. Lighter body with some prickly carbonation.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20
Can from Save On. Nice pale hazy orange gold with white head and some lace. Nice lemony pixie stick aroma at first then some additional hop spiciness from the cardamom, I guess. Mild fruity mango sweetness with nice lemony grassy dry hop finish only slightly tainted by the cardamom. Nice light refreshing soft body and carbo. Surprisingly excellent.

2.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Can:   Pale straw, hazy, really no head to speak of, and no lacing.   Fragrant soapy nose.   Smells very artificial, or urinal cake like.   Thankfully not as strong on the tongue.   Sweet cardamom abounds.
Seems wheaty, and thankfully not mealy.   Body and mouthfeel are moderate.   Cardamom and sweet wheatiness on the finish.   Still seems a little soapy and overly fragrant, but at least its not mealy like so many
American examples.   Decent, but the spices seem a little fake at times.   Just needs to be more floral overall.

3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
Pours a clear golden-blonde with a quick soft white head. Nose is fairly strong with lots of orange, coriander, and a touch of tartness. Flavor is a bit less potent and definitely a lot less sweet, with the more tart and bitter aspects of the ale coming out harder. Backside is a little too bitter for the style. Not overall bad, but Iíve definitely had better saisons.
