We’ve been doing Double IPAs for years, then we did a Black IPA; Double Black IPA is the next logical step, right? Toasty malt backbone accentuated by a ton of piney hops.

Draft. Dark amber beer with a cream colored head. Hige grapefruit aroma. Grapefruit and light pine flavor with light dark malts. Medium-plus bodied. Nice bitterness. Grapefruit and light pine lingers with light caramel and light darker malts.

From tap at the brewpub. Pours dark brown with a small tan head. Aroma is solid hoppy and light roasted dark malty. Dry hoppy flavoured to a smooth caramelish and toffee dark malt base. Lingering hoppy and malty finish. Nice.

Draught at the brewpub. Black color with a small beige head. Tons of pine and resin in the aroma with a touch of citrus and a little black malt. Lots of hop flavor all the way through with a touch of chocolate, but the dark malt gives more color than flavor here. Resiny and quite bitter but stops short of being harsh. Medium-full body with medium carbonation. A solid bruiser of a black IPA, but I wouldn’t expect less from these guys.

UPDATED: FEB 13, 2010 On tap at the brewpub. Clear deep ruby with a pretty decently retained beige head. Chocolate malts dominate the aroma with some roast and floral pine hops behind--was hoping for more hops. Flavor has more pine, thankfully, and go together with the chocolate and light roast pretty well. Still just a tad astringent, though. Dry finish with some alcohol, bitterness at a 4-5 with some lingering florals. Medium body with moderate prickly carbonation. Nice lacing. Pretty good.

On tap @ the brewery. Poured a Dark brown - looks like root beer with an off white head. Nose is tangerine, passion fruit, mango, little bit of semisweet chocolate. Taste is very IPA-y; grapefruit, resin, pine, subtle roast, more light flavour of dark toffee. The bitterness is there but its very subtle. Actualy Reminds a lot of a Westcoast double IPA as far as black ipa’s go. Medium mouth feel with nice carbonation, and no way I believe that this is 9.4%. Probably my favorite black ipa I’ve had.

On tap at the brewpub pouring dark brown with amber hues and lasting light tan head. The aroma tosses up a dash of dark malt roastiness before pine and earthy hops take over with a bit of sweet maltiness in the background. The taste has a brief moment of dark roasty malts and some malt sweetness before a wide load of pine hop and a thin layer of tasty citrus grapefruit hop bitterness completely over take the malts. It ends with a pleasing and refreshing modest dryness aided by the dark roasted malts. Very nice black IPA (or IIPA).

Tasted at brewery. Medium opaque brown with a fizzy white head. Big pine, grapefruit, pine, and grass aroma and taste with a dry, bitter, marijuana finish. Pretty good.

Tap at 21. Second rating of the beer. Nose is not vibrant - smells like a dunkelweiss with booze. Color is an impressive jet black. Favor is fairly competent but gives short shrift to the hops, which come across syrupy and bland. Mostly just glossy malt, mineral water, thickness.
