We’ve been doing Double IPAs for years, then we did a Black IPA; Double Black IPA is the next logical step, right? Toasty malt backbone accentuated by a ton of piney hops.

On draft at Tap 25. It pours very dark brown with a light brown head. The aroma has strong mango, grapefruit, passionfruit and pineapple with hints of cocoa, roasted malt and pine. The flavor has fruity hops up front with more bitter piney and roasted notes coming through near the finish. Some caramel malt is tasted and felt in the body. Nice fruity hops persist throughout the mouthfeel. Very intense and a little too much bitter pine in the finish, but still a tasty high gravity black IPA. That can be hard to pull off.

On tap at the brewery, called bike lane hopper. Pours black with a nice tan head. Aroma is really balanced between malts and hops. A lot of roasted quality with chocolate. Flavor is very roasted and tons of chocolate and hop bitterness, as well as a bit of coffee bitterness. Excellent balance. Good.

Draught at 21:st Amendment in San Fransisco. Big long lasting brown head. Dark red-brown color. Huge citrus aroma with just a bit of dark roasted malt aroma. Bitter and big hop taste were the bitterness lingers long. Small taste of chrystal malt blended with chocolate to give a complex taste mix. The best black IPA I’ve tried so far.

10% ABV version at the brewery tap during ’Strong Beer Month’ on 5th Feb 2013. Black body with a deep tanned head on top. Roasted and toasted malts rule the flavours here: the nose and taste completely controlled by those slightly singed malts, dark chocolate being the dominate taste and smell. Hop bitterness however is just below the surface and comes out slowly towards the end of each sip. OK and different (to a Brit on holiday), not the best beer I had during a long and heavy session in the tap, but certainly not the worst either.

Dark brown pour with a khaki head. Roasted malt, licorice, molasses, and cocoa aromas to start. Some toffee sweetness, citrus, floral, and herbal hops. The flavor is a bit too malty and sweet for my taste. Molasses and toffee, roast, licorice, and cocoa. Decent citrus peel, floral, and herbal hops. Mild pine flavor and bitterness.
