Growler straight from the brewery poured into a generic goblet glass. Pours a dark, murky amber with a large head. But it really does not look well, just a bad murkiness to the color, kind of looks like dirt poured in there. Aroma, can tell right away this is amateur work. Old hops, smell like crap, with too much sweet malt behind it. Taste is similar with a very strong, resiny bitterness which does not work well in a beer with a horrible hop flavor and too much residual sweetness. Tasted like a first time homebrew. I have been a big fan of 23rd but this one was really sub par.

Thanks for sharing the growler, beastiefan2k. The body was dark copper. The aroma was yeasty and grainy with some must. There was also a little bit of wood. The taste was fairly bitter with rye and oranges. There was also some apple core in the finish. Decent.

Growler courtesy of theisti. Thanks again for bringing this back from Lawrence, Tim. :) Pours a murky gold-orange with a creamy beige head that diminishes but can be roused with a swirl of the snifter. The nose is of big grapefruity hops with a subtle, sweet caramel malt backing. Medium-bodied and slick with a dry, tongue-raking bitterness at the finish. The flavor is a big punch of citric and resinous hops with a touch of pale malt and mildly spicy rye in support. It’s not nearly as much support as the nose might indicate nor nearly enough to counterbalance the hops to any significant degree. The finish is a lingering, drying, nutty-resinous bitterness that lasts well beyond the supporting sweetness of the malt, which collapses at the swallow like cotton candy dissolving on your tongue. Add more malt to this recipe and you would have a decent IIPA; as-is, however, it is so skewed towards the bitter side of the spectrum that even a hop head like myself found this one a bit too much.

UPDATED: JAN 19, 2009 Growler filled at the brewpub, consumed 4 hours later that evening. Pour is golden yellow, bit hazy and cloudy. Nice, full formed, white head. Nice lacing on the glass. Aroma is lemon citrus and the resin hops. Taste is the resin rye graininess with bit floral orange lemon citrus hops. Decent balance and bitterness throughout. Palate is medium, oily, though drinkable. Bit of alcohol warmth in the drying finish.
