Origin of name: This beer is named after its unique garnet red-brown color (darker than most dark beers). The color of Černá Hora Granát could lead its consumer to call it a "black beer". Taste: it is characterized by its fullness, sweetness and very dark color. A high proportion of Bavarian, caramel and coloring malt based on a longstanding recipe gives the beer its unmistakable caramel taste and markedly influences its bitterness. It is distinguishable by its good head and vigor. Has won 1st place in category of dark lagers upon competition - "The Golden Cup PIVEX - BEER 1999". Winning competition "Dočesná Žatec" in 1995 -1999 years

On tap in a cellar bar in Prague. Very dark beer, beige head. Roasted malt, tast, bread crust when you forgot the bread in the overn for five minutes too long. A sooty sourness that plays around with sweet malt. Truly great.

Back from a Czech Republic pub-crawl this is part of my express ratings for the “typical” Světlý 11°- (Czech light Pils), Světlý 12°+ (Czech Pils), Polotmavý (Czech Amber Lagers) and Tmavý (Czech Black Lagers). Non-typical beers will receive personalized deScriptions after the express ratings.
-------- /> How: Tap at Kralovstvi, Prague
The look: Dark ruby body with a large beige head
To me a typical Czech Tmavé (Czech Black Lager) is: Dark malts and barely any roastiness sensation. Some dark fruits flavours (raisins with a little figs, dates and prunes) wrapped in smooth dark caramel (borderline toffee) and a subtle chocolate note. A bit bready. Moderately sweet without much hops presence and only a mild bitterness (voluntary unbalanced it seems). Very smooth body, like a watery cream.
This one: As above but a bit sweeter and on the toffee side than average. A little prune juice flavour didn’t sit very well with the rest of the beer.

Bottle. Mmm, very tasty. Light bodied and refreshing, but with some good caramel notes sharpened by a little buzz of hops. Nice balance.

Bottle @ Qingdao beer festival. Black with small but stable tan head. Great asphalt and coal malts. Dry but with a licorice twist. Flavors are dry with some bitterness in the finish that is dull and papery but flavorful at the same time. Slightly chalky. Lingering bitter finish is reminiscent of olive and fruit pits. Not herbal or hoppy in a traditional way at all. Tree bark, cola nut, seeds. Smooth malt character. Easy going beer.

Bottle. Dark brown with a pleasant malt and caramel flavour. The body was a bit thin considering its strength which is my only criticism. Nice to try a different style from the Czech Republic. A nice beer.
