4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: JUN 21, 2015 2011-2012 vintage, aged a couple of years. Deep cherry red. No head. The aroma is deep raspberry, with woody elements, and some sugary sweetness. Very dry, quite woody, and it has a lot of berry character, leading to a long, dry finish.
1986 Vintage, sampled May 2004
Orangey-amber colour. Funky aroma - stinky cheese, raspberry and earth. So well-integrated you canít help nosing the beer over and over again. Slight acetic hint to the big acid body. Hugely complex - raspberries, nuts, leather and oak. Extremely well-balanced. Some sips youíre drinking a collection of great flavours, other sips youíre drinking just one great flavour. Drinking this is like peeling back layers of time as the beer slowly reveals itself. Outstanding. I gave this a 4.9, but fresh examples arenít near that level.

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Entered as my 4,000th rating!
This one had the wonderful distinction of being enjoyed by me in a reasonably dark and very cramped closet!
The beer pours pink and reasonably hazy without looking gross, itís got a pale pink head that rises and falls like champagne, itís pretty... but not stunning.
The aroma is really big on funk perhaps moreso than I had expected it to be even considering the producer. Itís got raspberries for days though which is heavenly. Itís got oak and lemon zest... and more like jammy raspberry.
The flavor starts with a sort of tart berry thing, itís earthy and itís sour... itís got lemon peel, then about mid palate the sort of jammy raspberry thing hits hard. Itís perfectly dry with a mild but pleasant bitterness. itís oaky and pungent with a little bit of under-ripe tomato thing happening, but itís chill.
Itís a complex and wonderful beer.
