4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 19/20 diabel (1537) - Aarschot, - DEC 28, 2005
Bottled at Kaffee den Hopduvel, Ghent, Belgium - 1999 Vintage Brownish pink, clear body. Fully diminishing head. Nose of cask wood and raspberries. Lightly sweet, heavily acidic flavour. Lightly to medium bodied. Very fizzy carbonation. The champagne styled flavours of the 3 Fonteinen Oude Gueuze are perefectly combined with the fruitiness of real raspberries (no syrup). Great craftmanship. I want more of this. Please Armand, start brewing this again.

UPDATED: MAY 25, 2012 Multiple bottles at S&B. Pours deep ruddy red in color with a tiny off-white head. The nose is heavy raspberry jam, very fruity. Some woody oak and strawberry cordial. Juicy, young lively nose. The taste is strong sugary jam, raspberry and strawberry. Bright buoyant flavors. Lightly tart with an underlying body of lactic sourness that shows itself after your adjust to fruits. Light mineral yeastiness. The body’s light, the carb active. Overall, it’s already drinking great, and it has plenty of room to grow some more funky subtle flavors. Very, very good.

[my 8,600th rating]
Pours hazy red with a lovely, creamy, off-white (light pink) head. Aroma has lots of fresh raspberries, tart, a hint of liqourice and tart red currants. Frothy, medium carbonation, great creamy and dry mouthfeel. Flavour starts super-tart, plenty of fresh raspberries, light funk. Lingering, drying out puckering tartness. Only softly lactic. Delicious and fresh.

Incredible aroma just packed with raspberries and funk. Taste is pure, tart, but sweetish, raspberries with a more toned down funk. Needs a couple of years to become truly amazing... but wow, this is an unbelievable beer.

10th May 2012 Bottle shared at Sour & Bitter. So here we are - white whale time! I’m not holding my breath though and it’s just as well. Hazy dark red beer with a tiny pale pink head. Light palate, semi dry. Fairly tart and unsweet raspberry come cherry. Acidic, too much so. Very dry finish, too much so. Just about drinkable but over tart and over dry. Can’t say this is a bad beer because way too many people I respect rate it so highly - just another example of me not appreciating or understanding this style at all. Have to mark ’em like I see ’em and I struggled through my meagre portion.

Bottle @ S&B - Pours dark pink reddish. Aroma of raspberries and almonds. Medium body with a well-balanced evolution of fruity sweetness in the front to the typical dryness of lambic in the finish. Taste of cranberries and raspberry, some lime notes as well.

Bottle at Sour & Bitter, shared with Evil stepdad and Beerbiker: Light brown with a red shade and a light off-white head. Lovely fresh rasberry aroma along with mild wood, wild yeast and citrus. Flavor is fresh rasberry juice, perfectly balanced with acidic notes. The balance and cleaness is what makes this brew great. Its not extreme or suprising in anyway, just really really clean and balanced

[5/10/12] Bottle sample at Sour & Bitter. Hazy deep red color with a bit of pinkish foam. Wonderful fresh raspberries aroma with some brett and oak. Rather dry sour flavor with a bit of citrus, some barnyard and tons of raspberries. Mouth-drying finish. Silky rounded mouthfeel. Believe the hype, this one’s incredible.
4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 JulienHuxley (1142) - Trois-Rivieres, Quebec, CANADA - MAY 15, 2012
Bottle Sour and Bitter 2012. Dark purple/brown pour with slight pinkish white foam. A ton of raspberry in the aroma, quite a bit of funk as well, something grassy there too, cheese. Rich flavor, lots of berry, although already less sugar than the nose would suggest, a light sweetness resides. The finish is tart and slightly lemony. I found it a bit heavy bodied, but still relatively dry. Good stuff, but I can imagine it benefiting from more age.
