Brigadier (877), Chagrin Falls, Ohio, USA Dec 12, 2007 750 ml bottle - Columbus X tasting
I never expected to get to try either of these much less both in the same night. Thanks again to moejuck for opening one of the best examples of gueuze on the planet. This too should hold up quite well for years to come so if you happen to ever run across it and have the money to spare order a bottle. Consider it a once-in-a-lifetime experience that is money well spent. Just be sure to have some friends on hand to finish the bottle; 750 mls of this might just overwhelm even the strongest stomach.
Aroma / Appearance - The hazy straw colored body was a little lighter than the Roze but not by much. Lacing stuck to the sides of my glass as if this final sample refused to be written off lightly. The vinous notes competed with blueberries to form a unique combination. Once again it was intensely sour and funky. I can almost remember the aroma in my head as I type these notes.
Flavor / Palate - Lemon juice mixed 50/50 with white grape juice filled my mouth. The finish of dry champagne was just what I expected. It was dry enough to suck every drop of moisture out of my mouth for almost fifteen minutes afterwards. The tartness and sourness made it a nice finish to the evening’s tasting. In many ways it reminded me of Bellevue Selection which is perhaps the only one that I would want to try again more than this.
DA (2376), Portland, Oregon City, Oregon, USA Aug 18, 2008 RBSG 2008. Pours hazy gold with a small white head. Dry acidic nose, hints of cheese, apple, and dusty barn. Very well balanced with a mellow sourness and acidity. cquiroga (370), Sylmar, California, USA Aug 18, 2008 I hope nobody minds this placeholder rating for the purposes of the DD Top Ten list accuracy. l’ve got a real rating somewhere, and l’ll enter it one of these days, but for now l hope it’s enough to say that one of the bottles I had of this was the single greatest beer l have ever had, bar none. Simply incredible. hapjydeuce (558), Carlsbad, California, USA Aug 14, 2008 RBSG ’08. Bottle shared at the Grand Tasting at Pizza Port Carlsbad. 1993 Vintage. This was a big standout geuze for me at the tasting. Pours opaque yellow with some white bubbles and yeast sediment. Mature aroma of wet barnyard, earth, juniper and fresh flowers. Lots of lemon citrus, oak and toasted biscuit yeast tones in the flavor. Moderate acidity. Very, very easy to drink. It still has some soft carbonation in the finish. illidurit (387), Santa Cruz, California, USA Aug 9, 2008 Bottle shared at RBSG 08 Grand Tasting. Cloudy dark gold color with a nice bubbly head. Aroma is explosive with oak and lemon. Very sharp. Flavors of lemon juice, crabapple skins, vinegar. All with an even woodiness throughout. Very crisp and drying on the palate. Very intense but easily drinkable for sour lovers. padrefan98 (592), (San Diego) Santee, California, USA Aug 6, 2008 Bottle shared at RBSG during the grand tasting held at Pizza Port Carlsbad in San Diego.
