BlackForestCO (819), Fort Collins, Colorado, USA May 27, 2008 Updated: May 3, 2009Another bottle shared by miketd at lb4lb’s tasting, thanks Mike. Poured a murky orange color with a thin white head. Aroma of tart, sour funk with some light berry. Moderately funky, tart entry with some fruity notes (lemon, light citrus, mixed berries) leading into a dry, yeasty finish. Dry and crisp on the palate. Nice, but it just didn’t have the kick the Blauw did. Extra notes written: Fly is an asshole - big time. WeeHeavySD (2940), San Diego (Hillcrest), California, USA May 11, 2008 750ml bottle @ Bill’s epic sour tasting, nicely shared by my buddy John, Mr Wetherel. Pours orange with a bright white head, nose is sweet and guezey and super funky. Taste is very funky and weird, there is a strange up front bitterness in this bottle, I liked it a lot, but I don’t know it seemed to have a weird character to it. wetherel (1565), Encinitas, California, USA May 11, 2008 Bottle from fonefan. Opened at Bill’s epic sour tasting. I never traded so much beer and went through so much stress to get the J&J’s. I’m pretty glad to finally try them. For the record I like Isabelle best, then 1996 Cantillion Gueze, then Blauw, then Roze, the 3F Gueze, etc. Pours a yellow amber color. Mildly sour. Some tannic bitterness. Easy to drink. Delicious, but not the awesomeness that I was hoping. MaxxDaddy (261), Hoboken, New Jersey, USA Apr 9, 2008 Bottle shared by marsiblursi (many, many thanks!!). Pours orange/gold with plenty of white head. Aroma is all about the funk, with some tartness, hay and citrus coming out as well. Taste is more barnyard with sour lemons that suck you dry. Some pepper and astringency that I expect in my lambics. Lively palate with a yeasty finish that leaves sour traces on the back of the throat. This is one hell of a beer. In fact, I think this one just edges out its male counterpart. GregClow (2492), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Apr 9, 2008 Bottle shared with HogTownHarry, blankboy, jerc, mabel & tupalev - courtesy of jerc & mabel. Slightly hazy golden-orange with a small white head. Aroma of funk, dust, cheese, lemon juice & yeast. Medium bodied. Lovely flavour alternates between sweet and tart - it’s funky and lemony, dry and woody, just really nice. Yum! rudolf (1734), Buffalo, New York, USA Apr 4, 2008 Slightly hazy gold, light tan head. Nose is soft (nutty?) acidity, tart fruit, wood, a bit of funk. Flavor is woody lemon pits. A nice hay malt hides below the acidity. Very nice but no Blauw. blankboy (3156), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Apr 4, 2008 Bottle (750ml) shared with HogTownHarry, GregClow, jerc, mabel & tupalev -- courtesy of jerc & mabel. Dated 08-09-2003. Pours a cloudy orange-yellow with an average size diminishing frothy white head. Aroma: Wow! Funky, citrusy, sweet, malty and pleanty yeasty -- so nice. Flavour of funky yeast, citrus, spices, some sourness and oak. Medium bodied. Simply fantastic, what a nice, rare treat! DSG (1501), Tel Aviv, Israel Apr 1, 2008 (3/9/08) Bottle at De Heeren van Liedekercke in Denderleeuw. Deep hazy orange with a quickly-diminishing white head. Lovely aroma with a lot of barnyard and citrus. A sour citric flavor with some funky brettanomyces character, and some bitter touches joining in later. Medium-bodied with not as much carbonation as in the Blauw. A fantastic beer.
