COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Oude Kriek 3 Fonteinen is produced by ripening of cherries (both the flesh and the seeds) in young Lambic. This process takes between 6 to 8 months. After bottling the beer matures for at least 4 months in a warm room where the spontaneous fermentation in the bottle is done.
The head of Oude Kriek is very sensitive to the concentration of the cherry seeds containing oil and may differ from one year to the other.
On old Cherry 3 Fonteinen, no flavorings, sweeteners, or dyes added which makes this beer very natural and is especially thirst quenching.

UPDATED: DEC 19, 2003 Yes! Finally I'm starting to like Lambics. Strange, it is autumn and quite cold overhere. However this is a good thing soon I have to adjust my ratings of other Lambics. I only sampled this one, but it was really a good experience. Aroma is old, cherries in it, some wood. Red coloured. Taste is sour, fruity (cherries) and wood. The cherries are not to present which makes this a very decent kriek. Dry palate.

Rose colored, with a thick pink head. Aroma of cherries, mixed with musty sour notes. Dry finish, Excellent Kriek.

The aroma is sweet with slight notes of cherries. The color is a clear red-brown and it has a light red fine but collapsing head. The flavor is of sour cherries with strong notes of wood and a underlying sourness, that brings out the saliva. An OK kriek, that places itself between the sweet ones and the sour ones.

Sour, wine-like nose - complex: grassy, spicey, and piny. Just incredible and I haven't even taken a sip yet. Clear, luscious cheery color and fizzy, low clinging head. Cherries, of course, in the body of the taste. Darker than the Cantillon kriek and syrup-like. Very dry finish at the front of the tongue. Unreal, godly balance. Scathingly sour. "Uncredible" (Lorenzo Dabove).

At the brewery - Bright red, big bubbles. Cherry aroma is quite nice. Somewhat tart, but sweet. Very nice kriek!

(indeterminate age) Quite clear red with amber shine. Pink foam speckled with little brown pinspots. Nose of cherries, wet wood, autumn shrubbery, coal gas, sulphur. Very sour immediate taste, vying with vague lactic, woody, apple, preserved-jam notes. Very tart, harsh finish with lemonjuice on the lips. Acid burn and refreshing. Long, tart, bone-dry aftertaste. I like it. A lot. But I can imagine people being more conservatively disposed towards their upper digestive tracts might not really appreciate this. This is for the diehards.

I had the 96 vintage at the cafe. And this was the best beer of an 8 day Belgian beer safari. This beer was a revellation of how a big complex gueuze based beer can combine high acidity, rich fruit flavour, a little rounding sweetness and blend it all in perfect synergy. If I had one beer to drink for the rest of my life, it would probably be this one. Based on that, I am giving my first full marks ever: 5.0.

UPDATED: MAY 29, 2003 Sharpier and cask-woodier than the Girardin Kriek I had before, also cheesier. Lighter/pinker in color, still completely unfiltered as in the Girardin, beautiful pink huge head. A different animal than the Oud Beersel Kriek and the Girardin...right in the middle between them. Delicious.

My wife convinced me to taste hers...what a surprise, after taking nearly five minutes to open the darned thing. I have since opened many more, and will keep doing so. Cherry all the way from lid/cork to bottom of bottle.

More like a geueze than a Kriek, but the cherry flavor is present both in the initial and after taste. Not for the first timer to lambics, acidic, powerful and great.
