4.7 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 20/20
75cl bottle at home, 1996 vintage. This bottle was corked, capped and very dusty. The cork was very long...so long that I lost the end of it into the beer. The pour produced a crystal clear bright ruby beer with still a huge amount of colour remaining (almost as much as a new bottle). The smell was fantastic! No oxidisation at all and I mean none!! It smelled of cinnemon, nutmeg, clove and cherry. Almost like a christmas spiced beer. Everyone that tried it said that they had never experienced a Kriek with such a christmas flavour. As we went down the bottle the sourness was more pronounced and the pours where becoming very murky. There was a huge amount of sediment in this bottle. This may well be the most gracefully aged beer Ive ever had. Everyone agreed that it could easily last another 10 years.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
37,5 cl. Pours a deep ruby red with a small pink head. Aroma has almondy, dry oak and vanilla, very unripe cherries, leather, tart vinegar and vinous oaky sour fruityness. Taste is very cirussy and vinegar tart up front, but gets more deep and cherry-fruity with hints of winegum. Ends of with dry, oaky bitter notes. Some vanilla as well. Sparkling, crisp body with a medium high carbonation.

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Classic ’oude kriek’, 2011 vintage for this rating. Loose, champagne-like structured, fiercely crackling, pinkish head dissolving in seconds; colour deep purplish red, clear at first, with low fizz. The aroma is subtle and complex, with hints of, obviously, fresh sour cherries and cherry stones, red wine vinegar, wet hay, very old dry sherry, cava, redcurrant, sour yoghurt, apple peel. In adding more from the bottle, the tart lambic complexity comes more to the foreground. Extremely refreshing and ’cleansing’ in the mouth, vivid sparkling but in a refined, champenoise way, enthusiastically displaying a ton of sour cherries with a restrained, fully natural sweetishness paired with pointy and subtle, lemony acidity drying the mouth; funky, tart lambic complexity follows, wheaty, sherryish, with a more ’downtuned’ lactic acidity (sour cream); the finish is long and bone dry due to the different acids playing with each other, supported by clear woody tannins. Pure lambic and pure fruit, what more can you want on a day when the first, timid signs of spring seem to appear on the horizon... An evergreen, very refreshing, not too sharp and with more emphasis on the fruits than on the lambic funkiness, though it is obviously there, with a perfect balance between young lambic acidity and old lambic nobility. Always a delight.

Bottle 375ml. Deep cherry-red color with small pink head. Aroma is great, sour cherry notes, funky notes, red wine notes - it’s beautiful! In taste it’s very juicy, and with great sourness comes sweetness as well. This beer is well ballanced and aftertaste is very refreshing and quite long. Amazing one!

Bottle from Beer Planet, Brussels. Pours clear deep ruby, pink-tinged head puffs up then dies quickly. Nose of cherry, juicy berry, cheesy acidity, brett funk, some vinous red wine-esque notes. Tastes a tiny bit sweet and then medium-full sour, dry tannic cherry, sharp berry, funk, oak, cheese. Medium light body, oily texture, slightly fizzy sharp carbonation, long dry sour juicy finish. Very good!

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
375mL corked bottled from Beer Cartel. Bottled 22/5/2015
Amazing looking beer - deep murky scarlet body with a creamy half-inch of pink head persisting.
Funky aroma, a lot going on; ripe cherry, sour cherry/Kirsch, oak, red wine vinegar, barnyard, hard cheese, earthy phenolic spice (Brett?) undertones.
Lean body, moderate acidity with good length, a touch of tannin with reasonably high carbonation.
Bit tighter on the body, not giving away quite as much as the aroma; vinous red cherry, subtle barnyard & funky cheese, touch of toasy oak & citrus rind, with some acetic acid in the works. Reasonably long finish, acidity refreshes, providing good balance.
Solid amount of fruit & funk in this one to make it rather tasty.
