3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Deep, deep ruby red in color, bright red head. Aroma is extremely sour. Taste is definitely a Kriek-hits you square in the mouth with a fermented fruitiness that doesn’t turn too sweet. Normally I enjoy these sour krieks, but this one just made my mouth twist a little. Luckily, the decaying fruit flavor dissipates into a sweeter aftertaste, but...

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
375 mL bottle. Bottled December 14, 2007. Originally reviewed 10/16/2011.
Murky ruby body with a miniscule head. Retention is poor and I’m left with a ring around the surface and not much more.
Musty, funky, rife with barnyard aromas. This is why I love Drie Fonteinen lambics; they’re funk-forward. There is an acidity that carries a hint of cherry.
Right up front, I do get a sour cherry flavor, but it fades to funkiness and oak quickly. The middle is very much a hay and wood flavor, with a healthy dose of funk. The cherries return in the finish. It’s a battle between horseblanket and cherries that the cherries eventually win through a lasting tartness.
Maybe not as effervescent as I’d like it to be and the sourness does fatigue the palate just a bit. I’m being nitpicky, but it’s true. The carbonation isn’t as high as the Oude Gueze, but it’s still substantial enough to avoid complaint.
I love lambics with a lot of funk to them and this one delivers as all the Drie Fonteinen lambics seem to do. The acidity is still strong, but enjoyable. Good stuff and I look forward to comparing it to the Schaerbeekse I have stashed away.

4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Pours a clear burgundy with a pink head that leaves good lacing. Nose is of cherries, rubber and oak. Some cherry pits, too. Taste is moderately tart and really dry, offers more sour cherries. Lightly tannic. Body is light to medium, carbonation moderate and mouthfeel just really vinous. A really nice oude kriek, 3F is really the best one to do it!
