bartlebier (1542) - Belchum im Breisgau, GERMANY - JUL 27, 2014
UPDATED: JUL 28, 2014 33cl bottle, Geers. A thinner than expected black, impervious filter coffee pour. Organically, earthily, many-hued soured porter incorporating the aromas of red berry arabica coffee beans, suave bitter chocolate with dried cherries, rich roasted beans of either the coffee or cocoa variety, in both liquid and granulated form, red wine if left open for a while. Very easy to drink, a lactic but easy sourness guides the palate towards sessionabilty. Splendid aftertaste, subsuming all fruity (berries and apple), powdery, vinous notes in a masterfully dry coda. - This original, subtle, stellar dessert of a beer, with much more potential pairing options - yet holds up confidently in and by itself.

clear dark ruby red with brown lasting, lacing foam head. Aroma is quite interesting, bit sour yet also some caramel, little leather. Taste likewise, mixture of sour gueuze and caramel dark beer. (Velp 201407)

On draft. Black with beige head. Malty aroma. Taste is slightly coffee and smokey. Enjoyable.

Appearance: very dark brown, hint of red at the edges, creamy tan head and good shimmery lace curtains. Aroma: light roast espresso, hint of dark chocolate, definite sour, woody nose. Taste: light chocolate, cold-pressed coffee (light acidity), hint of oak and vanilla and cherry. Finish: definite sour stone fruit on the back end, with the roasty porter notes quickly fading. Notes: On draft at Birch and Barley in DC. On the light side, flavor-wise, but very creative. Had a similar concept once (oak-aged sour cherry porter) which was absolutely TERRIBLE, but this was ok. Palate was also a tad light. Would have liked a touch more chocoalte and roast.

12 ounce bottle from Randalls North County. A big tan head slowly falls. The beer is very dark with minimal red. A unique aroma. I smell some chocolate but something else, too. Trying to ID it. It is kind of Cola Cola. A funky first sip that is somehow north western European. Some fruit and just a bit of wild funkiness. This is tasty and different. A creamy feel, largely because the foam never left.

July 15, 2014 - on tap at Flying Saucer. Just happen to be in KC for work and saw this on tap. Black pour with some head that faded quickly, but left some lacing. Aroma was tart dark fruit, roasted malt, yeast and some chocolate. Taste was consistent with aroma with a nice balance of the tart fruit and roasted malt. Finish was mild bitter coffee.

Bottled. Pours black with a small, lacing and creamy tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, yeast, fruit, brett notes and some chocolate. Sweet flavor that ends up dry ans a little sour. Medium bodied, watery to oily texture and soft carb. A nice and quite special Porter.

An opaque brown with the slimmest hints of chestnut around the edges. Has a nice khaki head that settles to a film and leaves excellent lacing. Aroma has nutty roasted coffee and slight cocoa character, a vinous quality and a bit of tartness. Taste is lightly fruity and a bit tart at first then you get some roasty coffee with cream and the cocoa followed by some berry flavor. There is some smoke and charred flavor in the finish. Aftertaste has some mild roasty bitter and a bit of the tartness that fades, but otherwise dry. Mouthfeel is semi creamy with a light/medium body and moderate carbonation. Interesting porter that would be good with food. The slight tartness didn’t turn me off but I prefer my porters without it.

330ml bottle from Beautiful Beers online. Black-brown colour, foamy biege head leaving lots of lacing and aroma of roast malt, chocolate, nutty along with zesty, fruity, yeasty, funky notes. Taste is chocolatey malt, smoke, molasses, coffee, dark fruits, light bitter with a tartish lemony & barnyard edge. Smooth mouthfeel, medium bodied, soft carbonation, tart & roast bitter at the finish. Very drinkable.

(bottle - 330 ml) Dark brown pour with a puffy tan head. Lightly roasted aroma with a touch of earthy and funky yeast. Wasn’t very sour but still gave a good flavor to it.
