3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Black with a puffy light tan head. Aroma of banana bread dough, licorice, coffee. Some funky notes buried under big doughy yeast and fruit. Lightish bodied, not slippery but creamy and alive. Tangy sourness isn’t totally expected from the aroma but a little comes in quickly to underpin the bread and mocha and it takes the overripe fruit aspect almost away. Interesting.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Dark brown color with medium fluffy light brown head and thick crazy lacing. Aroma and flavor have vinous, grapey notes, with strong cocoa and roasted malts. Great combination of tart and malts. Very good overall.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Medium aroma of malts, caramel, berries, dark fruit, liquorice, brettanomyces and acidity.
Opaque dark brown beer with a slight brown head.
Starts medium sweet with malts, caramel, dark fruit and liquorice; ends slightly dry and sour with brettanomyces and acidity.
This beer is rather intense, complex and balanced. A really strange Porter thanks to the huge amount of brettanomyces. These add a lot of berry and (dark) fruit flavour, but the beer loses so much essential flavours thanks to it. When these sour touches finally lay down however, the chocolate almost manages to shine through. A decent beer all-over and a really unique one.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
330 mL bottle. Originally reviewed 5/20/2013.
Shy of black. Big khaki head. Thick collar. Nice wisps.
Smells of dark chocolate. Some acidic notes. Hefty roasted malts. Slight acidic aroma. Brett, maybe?
Way more acidic taste. Whoa. Grain and lemon acidity. Deep roast. Finishes roasty. Nice chocolate finish.
Lots of carbonation. Overcarbonated. Medium body.
Definitely not your ordinary Drie Fonteinen beer. Clean combination of sour and roast, though, which isn’t a common attribute.

4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
12 ounce bottle (?)
After sitting in the cellar for long enough I broke this out during the 4th of July holidays. The hallmark of a top notch 3F beer was about as subtle as the people shooting off firecrackers and other fireworks. It would be great to try this on draft some time should I ever make a return visit to Belgium.
Aroma / Appearance - The deep carbonated base glimmers with evident bubbles and life. A yellowing ivory head hints at decaying sunbleached fragments of paper. Vinegar and funk power the aroma which is more lambic than porter by now. In particular sweat socks and yeast overwhelm any aspects of malt, coffee, or chocolate.
Flavor / Palate - Funky chocolate bleaches the tongue clean with sparkling bubbly brightness. Nuttiness then blooms in a way that defines a whole new style. If lambic porters were a thing this would be the exemplar. I might still seek out their more traditional sours but I would certainly present this to someone who thinks all dark beer is heavy and tastes like Guinness just to get a reaction. Afterwards I would finish the remaining 10 ounces.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Very nice combination of the darker roasted/chocolate aromas and the fruity sweet-sourness of the yeast. Even though it is a dark beer, I found it quite refreshing and easy to drink. If you like your beers a bit sour, you should definitely try this one.

Deep, dark color, caramel color head. Roast smell with hint of something else. Robust, complex flavor, bit of coffee, with a sourness. Pleasing palate, smooth and lasting.
