3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 FlacoAlto (3143) - Tucson, USA - SEP 6, 2011
A soft pour into my large Tripel Karmeliet tulip produces a one-finger thick, lightly browned, dark tan colored head. The beer is a burnt brown color that shows opaque when held up to the light. The beer has a sort of apple tartness to it as well a funkiness that is sort of like ripe cheese, somewhat musky and not really phenolic, but sort of leaning in that direction. Towards the back of the nose there is a toasted, somewhat roasted, whole grain character as well as a nice cocoa note that comes out more as the beer warms up. In the really long finish some of the characteristic phenolic Brettanomyces funkiness starts to come out; something like curing plastic and a muskiness, though not really either. The progression of the aroma is the tart, sort of apple like frutiness then the porter dark malt notes and then the phenolics.
Light bodied and somewhat tart from both the roasted malt as well as the funkiness. The roasted character has dryness and bitterness to it, both of these are accentuated by some prickly, carbonic, carbonation. There is some savory cocoa flavors that mix together with a slightly more noticeable toasted, wholesome dark brown bread character. The finish also has that characteristic Brettanomyces phenolic notes that leans towards plastic and a touch of musky sweat character. After the carbonation has died down a bit the body picks up a touch of creaminess to it, but overall this is quite light bodied (I’d guess that the Brett has done a reasonable job of attenuating this beer).
This is quite tasty, I am not sure I would prefer it to a normal Porter, as the sharper funky, Brettanomyces notes clash a bit with the roasted Porter notes. The aroma is definitely a bit nicer and richer than the flavor.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 Scopey (1652) - Croydon, Greater London, ENGLAND - APR 3, 2012
Bottle at CBC. It pours black, with a thick tan head. The nose is floral, lemon, tart green apple and farmyard. The taste is roasted malt, caramel, tart green apple, lemon, coffee, tangy dark fruit (blackcurrant and prune), chewy malt and alcohol warmth, with a dry finish. Medium body and fine carbonation. I’m not in love with this sour dark beer style, but it’s a decent beer nonetheless.
