ParrotDog took advantage of being in Melbourne for Good Beer Week to team up with 3 Ravens and Two Birds and brew a beer they called Fly By Night. It’s a Black IPA made with, naturally, Falconer’s Flight hops. And a handful of kegs from this batch are on their way to Hashigo Zake. We’ll launch the beer at 5pm on Monday, August the 5th.

What an odd beer (as Black IPAs tend to be) a glass of inky blackness with a scum of grey head. A niff brings floral characters, citrus peel and marmalade and flavours of the same... in a glass that is black. Incongruous, intriguing and interesting... and I’ll have another thank you.

UPDATED: JAN 3, 2015 Impressive aroma and full bodied flavour with a hint of licorice and cocoa. Probably not typical of the style but a delicious drop nonetheless.

Beer Deluxe ontap (9-Jul-13) Burnt malt herbal hop aroma. Black with red tinge, decent head and ringed sheet lacing. Spirit woody sweet malt and herbal flavour. Herbal bitter hop finish and spirit herbal hop aftertaste.

Pours black with beige head that fades quickly. Aroma is sweet, floral and of pine nuts, nice. Initial taste is kinda watery then the flavour kicks in. Amazing smokiness, slightly citrus with dry bitterness. Medium bodied, slightly acidic but very drinkable.

Draft at Hashigo Zake. Completely black color, beige head with good retention and solid lacing. Aroma of bright pine needles dipped in coffee. Taste is light pine and cocoa. Very nice.
