voota (754), Melbourne, Australia Jan 15, 2008 Firstly, hats off to three ravens for tackling this style. Pours clear brown with a weak off-white head. Nice oaky, chocolate aroma, the smoke comes through as less of the meaty and more of the woody type.. Reminded me a bit of the spezial rauchbier, though not quite as good. The body is pretty standard and delivers the flavours easily enough. More woody smoke in the mouthful, really subtle and enjoyable. Picked up a bit of hazelnut ritter sport chocolate or something too. Nice toasty finish with a hint of smoke. Excellent.

MBison (445), Southern Highlands, Australia Jun 18, 2008 Bottle (330ml). Lucky grab from Camperdown cellars last bottle! Poured hazy deep bronze with a large, dense, foamy, off-white head which lasted quite well. Aroma was not as smoky as most smoked beers I have had with only hints of ham and wood, some salt, toffee malts, mandarin, dark berries and some spice (all spice?). Flavor again was only mildly smoked with a slight dusty/rustic smokiness, hints of ham, salt, toffee malts, orange zest (faint) and some all spice in the finish. Medium bodied with lively carbonation, a dry\chalky mouthfeel and an ok finish. I was really looking forward to trying this one but it really lacked a lot of smoke character for my liking. eczematic (1172), Sydney, Australia Jun 9, 2008 this beer is basically tooheys old made with smoked malt. underneath the rauch, same slightly dusty chocolate malt, lack of hops, dry finish, strawberry ester. ok after a couple more sips, this has a bit more melanoidin guts. but still a fairly flat one dimensional palate. certainly smokier than the redoak version though.but then the redoak one is a lager and i think that works better to bring out the malt. Lunkie (1020), Glen Iris, Australia Jun 3, 2008 Sweet cany malt hop aroma. Clear red brown colour with poor head and lacing. Sweet malt candy flavour with hint of berries. Fizzy palate. Labarde (22), Australia May 9, 2008 Big malt aroma, very smoky. Pours a dark amber with a beige head with big bubbles didn’t last long. Smoke! Flavour is malty and tastes of smoky wood with somewhat meaty notes as well. Relatively smooth mouthfeel with a smoky finish that is not especially bitter. A very interesting beer but not one I particularly enjoyed. I am not a fan of smoky flavours in general and found the smokiness overpowering.
