Oak Aged Smoke Beer. 3 Ravens Double Ale Noir is the Uber incarnation of our original Ale Noir. It is a blend of two ’vintages’ of our acclaimed 3 Ravens Dark (Smoke) Ale, both aged in French Oak that previously held Pinot Noir from the Otways: the initial vintage was allowed to mature over 10 months; whereas the second a mere 10 weeks!

Tasting at Papsø’s
Muddy brown color, medium sized head. Woody and smoke aroma, delicate and interesting, with some goat cheese and ammonia trace. Light body, with caramel flavor, some mild roasted malt, and just traces of smoke, betraying the promise of the aroma; low bitterness. Not impressive.

(Sample at Papsø’s) Pours a clear dark amber with little off-white head and lace. The aroma is mostly oak and something undefinable that is probably the smoke. Full-bodied, medium carbonation, oily texture and a dry finish. The taste is malty with some tart, vinous notes. Interesting beer.

Bottled. A brown beer with a bit of sediment floating around under a tan head. The aroma has notes of caramel, alcohol, and some roasted malt. The flavor is sweet with notes of malt, caramel, and alcohol, as well as a bit of brettanomyces, leading to a tart finish.

Bottle 75 cl. Courtesy of bluebetty. Pours an almost clear amber with an off-white head. Odd gluey aroma with an oaky edge. Medium body, sweet caramel and nuts with a pleasant oaky note while the smoke is extremely downplayed. A slight tartness. A little roast and ashes. But interesting indeed. 180911
