BBE Jan 09. Clear dark red - brown beer. Crispish palate, slightly dry. Slightly sour, a little toffee apple and cinnamon. Finishes with more cinnamon apple tartness. Not bitter or overdry. Unusual and tasty.

Cask at NWAF 2009. A red-brown beer with a thin tan head. The aroma has notes of malt, spices - mainly cardemomme and cinnamon. The flavor is sweet with notes of cloves and cardemomme, leading to a dry very spicy finish. Too spicy for my liking.

Bottle shared by nimbleprop on 1/10/10: Pours a transparent dark copper with a small, stringy-lacing off-white head. Aroma of toasty dark caramel and bready malts with a hint of figs and raisins. Starts with pretty good fullness and sweet dark caramel and biscuity malts with some grassy and piny English hops. Finishes drier and bittersweet. A pretty good English strong ale.

Bottle at first DC tasting of 2010. Clear and light maroon with lots of fizz and an edge head. Subtle candy caramel aroma with blatant alcohol. Malts dominate the flavor, lots of alcohol. Slight funk and spice. Light body Difficult on the palate.

From DC Local tasting. Pours nearly opaque cloudy red from the yeast. Aroma is sour cherries, Brett. (?) Taste is very bready, doughy, some spices. Didn’t really come off as a heavy, spiced winter beer.

16oz bottle sampled at the DC Local Tasting. Pours a translucent, amber brown with a thin, slightly creamy white head. The bottle says "Best by January 2009", which had some people worried. Aroma is tart, cherries, brett, chocolate, bread. Flavor has chocolate, bread, spices, nutmeg, caramel. Finish is dry.

Cask @ National Winter Ales Festival 2009, Manchester. Pours a dark amber brown color with a small off-white head. Has a fruity malty dark fruit aroma with some roasted hints. Sweetish malty caramel and dark fruit flavor. Has a sweetish sightly roasted malty caramel finish with hints of dark fruit in the aftertaste.

I was told this was quite good prior to buying this, didn’t realise it was 7.5% and didn’t get my hopes up but was pleasantly surprised it lived up to the hype. "Plump" fruit characters is an accurate description for me as the fruit characters in this beer do stand out and seem very "round" and not one dimensional - in the aroma and taste, Quite filling probably could only have a couple or three.
