This is, in fact, a wheat beer. Beneath its rich, dark exterior and cascading head, you will find a classic unfiltered wheat presentation fused with the smooth, roasty, chocolate-like characteristics of the dark wheat malt. With a finish this unnervingly smooth, even a black sheep starts to feel normal again.

Very little head, great nose of chocolate and coffee. Nice dark brown almost black color. Taste leaves more to be desired very sweet and malty with very little hop presence to equal it out. Mouth feel has a lingering sugary almost syrup feeling. Might be much better as a nitro or on tap for more carbonation.

Interesting d-weiss. Picked up notes of chocolate, alcohol and a slight hint of licorice. The appearance is as expected, opaque and unfiltered. The taste is unexpectedly complex, quite a symphony. Banana, chocolate, again a slight hint of licorice and the warming of the alcohol on the back end. The mouthfeel is reminiscent of Edelweiss Dunkel Weissbier to my palate, not identical but very similar. Overall a very good brew.

Notes of chocolate, bread, and roasted malt.Deep brown color with a frothy tan head. Roasted sweet malt up front, Notes of coffee and chocolate, but mild in flavor. Sliky mouthfeel, finishes with same sweetness, and then a faint dry bitternss sets in. Interesting beer.

Dark brown/black color; Medium creamy body; Aroma of malt/wheat, some clove, & cocoa/chocolate; Flavor of malt/wheat, some yeast, caramel, bananas, and dark chocolate; Has porter/stout qualities - pretty decent.

Bottle. Engine oil black. Aroma is a nice rich roasted malt and chocolate combo. Taste starts heavy, roasted, chocolate cake, espresso, then abruptly turns thin and has a wheat-like tart finish. I think the dark malts ultimately overwhelm any flavor nuance of the light wheat.

Bottle. Banana and chocolate malt aroma - hint of charcoal. Very dark brown with moderate head. Charcoal, dark chocolate, and roasted wheat malt flavor. Mildly bitter herbal finish. A nice beer but tastes more like a schwarzbier/stout than a dunkelweizen - intensity of the malt covers up any phenols that might be present.

Draft pour at The Publican. Interesting hybrid style wheat beer with a dull chocolate malt taste. Slightly roasted note with a porter-esque mouthfeel. Interesting, falls off a little near the end but solid. Has a slight anise feel on the back end as this warms.

Bottle: Rubied-black with a tall, oatmeal head. Chocolate powder, roast aroma. Taste is sweet, chocolate malt, cream. Tasty....though more along the lines of a sweet porter.

On tap, pouree into a pilsner glass / imperial pint hybrid. The aroma is a dominant roasted coffee with roasted grain. Itís a nearly opaque brown/black beet with a light fluffy head and a medium thick creamy ring. Thereís also a very light, runny lace consisting of micro bubbles. The taste is medium sweetness with a medium - light bitter quality. The texture is creamy, but light, and has a medium - full, rich, roasted body. This one has lots of soft carbonation helping it go down. A smoked grain finish is accompanied by a touch of burnt toast and some raisin sweetness. Its a mostly dry finish. The burnt grains linger in the aftertaste reminding you that it is, in fact, a wheat beer, and not a porter. The aftertaste does cling a bit

Calling this beer a black wheat ale implies itís a dunkelweizen and this beer isnít even remotely on planet dunkelweizen. It is more of a porter or stout brewed w/ a lot of wheat in the grist. It does have the creamy texture of a Bavarian wheat beer but it has none of the bananas or cloves youíd expect in the aroma. This isnít a bad thing, thatís just how it is. I personally think this has a really nice nose w/ loads of roast coffee aromas. The wheat allows it to be thick and luscious on the palate w/o being too sweet but unfortunately this is a touch on the overcarbonated side for a beer w/ such a strong roasted grain presence. This is a pretty good beer overall. Fix the carbonation issue so you can taste a bit more nuance and I bet it would be great.
