COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Barrel aged Bona Fide Imperial Stout is a special one off beer in collaboration with Paul Hayden at the Wine and Cheese place and Goshen Coffee. Bona Fide is our Russian Imperial Stout brewed with a single origin coffee and vanilla beans. This single project was aged in a Buffalo Trace Bourbon barrel for 11 months. Aromas of whiskey, coffee and vanilla dominate.

22 oz bottle shared by phaleslu at Natifest (from notes). Pours dark cola brown to almost black with a thin off white film. The aroma and flavor have roasted malts, dark chocolate (more chocolate than the other versions), bourbon, vanilla, coconut, wood, an unexpected spicy note maybe from the wood. Good earthy bitterness and a more coffee than I remember too. Solid beer (I really like what these guys are doing with barrel aging) and different enough from the other barrel treatment.

Bottle shared at Natifest ’14. Poured a black color with an average frothy brown head that mostly lasted with excellent lacing. Moderate to heavy roasted coffee, chocolate, fruit and wood aroma. Heavy toasted chocolate malt and complex alcohol flavor with a heavy dark sweet and small alcohol bite finish of moderate to long duration. Medium to full body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. This is standout beer.

4 Hands Bona Fide Barrel Aged Stout. Bomber. Natifest ’14 Buffalo Trace Barrel Aged Appearance – Very Dark – of course. No head to speak of. Nose – Very deep stout smell. Quite amazing. Flavor – Thoroughly delicious. Super deep roasty flavors. Complex & mellows throughout the tasting. Notes – Excellent aged beer. Much better than typical ‘barrel’ aged beers. Likely due to the solid underlying stout and expert craftsmanship of barrel aging.

Bottle shared at Natifest by phaleslu. Pours a near black with no head. The aroma is decadent chocolate cake. Some cinnamon and vanilla beans. The taste is sweet and a little boozy. Big body. Low carbonation.

22 oz. bottle via local STL in-person trade. 168 bottles, May 2014 release. Pours a deep, kind of inky opaque brown with a tiny ring for a head. Gigantic chocolate aroma, with vanilla, oak, brown sugar, fudge, dates, cake, and faint spice. Flavor of vanilla, fudge, brownie, pralines, oak, and toasted and roasted malts. Medium-bodied, with low to moderate carbonation and a rich, sweet mouthfeel that finishes dry. Along with Madagascar and the other versions of this, these guys are really proving to be world class with their barrel aging experiments. Keep them coming.

8/02/2014: Bona Fide (Buffalo Trace)... Wonderful bourbon vanilla in the aroma. Flavor is so damn good and hard to describe: lots of vanilla, milk chocolate, and malt. This beer is sweet, but not cloying. There is so much flavor and depth without being overly thick and heavy. There is some alcohol coming through, but the the soft vanilla and maltiness sweetness seems to balance it all out.

Bomber thanks to the Reds lover - bourbon stout nose. Chocolate, vanilla, and wood. Smooth. Roasty.

Bomber to taster at NatiFest (shared by phaleslu). Looks good; a slightly translucent very dark cola with tan head that steadily dissipates into lacing. Smells and tastes awesome! Dark malt, chocolate, loads of vanilla, and a nice balance of oak and whiskey. Pleasant on the palate with a surprisingly light mouthfeel. I wasn’t expecting this; this is stunning!

On tap at 4 Hands. Black with a small tan head. I amell vanilla, earth, big malts, and whiskey. Not a big whiskey nose but it is tasyed more and leads the flavor profile. It is not overly stressed here and is just right. This is whay I hope a whiskey stout will be. Big sweetness, moderate whiskey, wood. That wood includes vanilla and the more funky side of the barrel. Fruit comes in later andis pleasnt. Good stuff. A lot to like.
