Draft at Monks. Just got a half pint. Poured a very dark clear orange brown in the tall glass. Fizzy/foamy beige head. Semi-sweet chocolate and coffee flavors. Dryer than expected. Brawny body from the oatmeal. Dry finish. Lingering burnt cocoa notes. Not bad, just not memorable.

3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Tasted on tap at the brewpub as part of a sampler flight. It poured an opaque dark brown colour, reddish at the edges, with thin layer of creamy tan foam and some lace. Bready, fruity, caramelly, toasty, a tad roasty, reminiscent of coffee and chocolate. Medium body, low carbonation, full mouthfeel. Lasting bittersweet aftertaste. A very well crafted brown ale.

On tap at the brewpub. Pours brown with a nice white head. Roasty noise with hints of chocolate. Roasted, slightly bitter and chocolate taste. Iíd almost think this was a stout if I closed my eyes when I drank it.

Bottle. Served in a snifter. Pours a dark brown, roughly the color of a deep porter, with a 1-inch creamy, tan head. Roasted malt and coffee aromas. Medium mouthfeel. Very strong roasted malt flavor, with the prevalent coffee flavor not far behind. Since American Brown Ales encompass such a wide range of flavors and approaches, itís difficult for me to say that Four Hands has created a spot-on version of the style. Rather, their version reminded me of a marriage of coffee stout and porter. It also had more of a hop presence than I expected, which was a pleasant surprise. While this isnít a brew that would become a ďgo-toĒ for me, itís definitely a solid beer Iíd drink again.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
This beer has a medium off-white head and is a dark brown with an amber tint, and the aroma is strongly like oatmeal and slightly like chocolate, vanilla, and roasted malts. This beer is of a medium bitterness while being a little sweet, but the finish is long and hearty. Finally, the combination of the flat carbonation, medium body, and creamy texture are pleasing to the mouth.
