On tap at Archive Beer Boutique. Rating from 2013. Consistently good beers keep coming out of 4 Pines Brewing and this is no exception. Aromatic, tasty with a good body and mouthfeel.

Tap. Best of the 4 Pines single hop varieties I have tasted. Strong hoppy aroma with a nice smooth body. Glad I tried it on tap

The epitome of splendour in the glass. A radiant, ruby copper with a surmountable amount of fin carbonation. Persistent, tenacious foam, off-white and held an inch proud. Gooseberries, sautéed tomatoes, Iranian dates in syrup, butter, carob, spoilt, fell stonefruit - the aroma is quite cumbersome and not at all enticing. Very soft in mouthfeel, almost still given the high visual carbonation. Creamy from the head. Burnt toast, rubber, dowdy cardboard - not a good initial profile. The same fell fruit of the aroma lingers long. Diacetyl is evident, and heavy caramel notes. The aftertaste is not impressive. Rather dire overall. Not impressed! Pint bottle Ruby body, good clarity, holds a tight white head. Fragrant hop upfront; grapefruit, tobacco, confectionery raspberry with a good dose biscuity and toffee maltiness. Moderate carbonation, full body, some slickness on the body with a firm bitterness. Toffee malt sweetness upfront precedes spicy hops with notes of bitter citrus and tropical fruits. Dry finish with lingering spice.. Decent IPA, different hop character with some decent supporting malt.

Pours ruby with a large head. Nose shows some nutty and toasty sweet malt along with a little caramel. Very ESB-like. Some earthy hops. Flavours follow along the same lines, focusing on the rich toasty and bready malt with a little earthy and tea-like hops in the background. Carbonation is a little full on.

Poor is a very nice clear copper. Aroma is of sweet malt with a hint of floral hops. Very sweet malts with hops trying to get through. All a bit too sweet for me. Easily drinkable.

Pours a lovely deep red with a finger of long lasting off white head.

Nose is dominated by sweet malts, with a bit of dark fruit, cotton candy and candy watermelon.

Flavour is again dominated by malt flavours. Attack is fairly sweet with some citrus and cotton candy. Finish is pretty sweet with more prune and cotton candy, and a very mild bitterness.

Medium body and good carbonation.

There’s nothing wrong with this beer, but it isn’t really an IPA. Too sweet and not happy enough. It’s almost a scotch ale in some ways. New hops are always interesting, but I’d really like to see this one in a more traditional IPA.

From 500 ml bottle. Pours a gorgeous clear copper-bronze (almost red) with a small off-white head. Very light carbonation. Biscuit, caramel, flowers and berries. The taste is lightly sweet at the front, with fresh apple and cherry and big, rich malt and flavours of biscuit and baked bread. A somewhat gentle hop bitterness comes in at the back end with some pine and lemon zest coming through. Slips away to a gentle finish and a spicy aftertaste with a touch of cherry. Quite a good beer, but not the American IPA suggested on the label - more like an English pale or a hoppy red ale.
