COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
5 Grass is a refreshing yet substantial beer that is pale in color and nicely hoppy. With this beer, we wanted to invoke the brisk, clean aroma of the desert. The recipe makes use of three unique hop varieties as well as some carefully chosen herbs and spices - juniper, sage, and Tasmanian pepperberry, among others - to give a beautiful outdoorsy scent. With itís smooth clean malt flavors and a unique, complex nose, 5 Grass is like a refreshing walk in the wide open spaces.

In Aztec mythology, 5 Grass was the symbol of life. In this worldview, nature is not inanimate, but is filled with life. Every bug, every flower, every plant is alive and filled with a spirit; each relies on everything around it to sustain and create a living world. 5 Grass invites us to reflect that we are a part of this web of life and that there are forces in nature that can intervene in our lives, which we are best served by knowing and respecting. By knowing nature, we come to know ourselves

Draft. Poured a clear brown color with an average frothy off-white head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Moderate to heavy earthy hop, and over the top herbal aroma. Medium body with a dry smooth texture and soft carbonation. Medium bittersweet flavor with a medium herbal bittersweet finish of moderate duration. Not my style.

This brew pours a copper-amber color with a medium foamy off-white head that recedes gradually. Sticky partial rings of lacing on the glass. Floral aroma with some malt and fruit in the background. Medium-bodied with flavors of herbal hops, roast malt and subtle chili peppers. The finish is peppery with a juniper and malt aftertaste. Slightly above average overall.

Sampled from the tap at the Mundelin beer fest. Pours a clear amber gold with an off-white head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has a nice grassy pine note with backing sweet bread. Flavor has a nice grassy note with backing light grains and a hint of light flora. Quite drinkable.

Draft from the Grand Slam stand at Great American Ballpark. Pours a cloudy dull orange with a small white head. Notes of juniper, sage, pepper, grass, florals, orange peel, and amber malts. Light-medium bodied, with a spicy, bitter mouthfeel and moderate carbonation. Interesting beer. The spices really stand out.

Draft on tap at Bad Apple (Chicago, IL). Stopped in after picking up a bunch of Half Acre stuff for trades and drinking because I saw this bad boy was here. Pours a rich orange amber hue with healthy glow, deeper coloring, orange and copper and some fiery deep sunset. A touch dulled with frothy brighter white head that dies to a film, laces ok overall. Aromas are a bit muddled with touches of grass, bread, pale malts. A gentle earthy element grows, lively touch of cactus, faint lime, grass, peppery spice, earth, herbal quality dance in as it warms and breathes a bit more. Mellow touch of citrus. Initial is fairly interesting, offering lighter end of medium bodied on the palate with a touch of girth. Touches of bready malts, cereal grains, distinct earthy and lime element, rind, touch of brush, bitter dryness, gentle spice earthy pepper quality. Middle shows a touch of toast, growing dryness and a distinct biscuity malt sweetness. Moves back into a dry, earthy, and gentle spicy backend and finish. Earth, grass, brush and mellow spice, citrusy lime rind. A fairly unique experience with a good dryness and earthy quality up front, moving into that distinct malty middle and quickly out again into the finish, firm dry and bitter qualities, earthy spice and herbal qualities. Seems quite well constructed as an experience.

On tap. Mildly hazy amber color. Some off-white head, leaving some lace. Definitely WEIRD for an "American Pale Ale", not your typical american pale ale at all. Hops aroma are very grassy, cannabis, with some citrus and other weirdness in there. Pretty bitter, more than your typical pale ale, with a sort of spicy (sage and black pepper) bite -- this might be more accurately classified as a spice beer. Light, smooth carbonation, more dry finish, medium body... But the aftertaste isnít entirely pleasant. Definitely interesting and unique, but so grassy itís almost a joke. Gotta say, though, seems like something Three Floyds would pull (itís not normal!)

Draft at Dutchís in July 2012. Pours a clear amber color with a large yellowish off white head. The aroma and flavor had big herbal/spicy notes; sage, some peppery notes, grass, some toasted malts. The finish had moderate bitterness without much other flavor.

Crisp light copper and golden coloured body with a bit of a bronzed glow and a thin, half a centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of bright grassy and grapefruity hops with a pinch of malt and some light sugars noticeable as well. Medium-bodied; Assertive effervescence with a very mild hop flavour, some touches of malt and not much else at all - very bland and weak. Aftertaste shows some very mild sweetness and grassy hop notes, but not much to write of. Overall, a pretty poor offering that is bland, uninspired and very simplex - no deep flavours at all or anything after the first five seconds. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Binnyís in Chicago (South Loop), Illinois on 21-August-2013 for US$1.67 sampled at home in Washington on 04-November-2013.
