COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
5 Grass is a refreshing yet substantial beer that is pale in color and nicely hoppy. With this beer, we wanted to invoke the brisk, clean aroma of the desert. The recipe makes use of three unique hop varieties as well as some carefully chosen herbs and spices - juniper, sage, and Tasmanian pepperberry, among others - to give a beautiful outdoorsy scent. With it’s smooth clean malt flavors and a unique, complex nose, 5 Grass is like a refreshing walk in the wide open spaces.

In Aztec mythology, 5 Grass was the symbol of life. In this worldview, nature is not inanimate, but is filled with life. Every bug, every flower, every plant is alive and filled with a spirit; each relies on everything around it to sustain and create a living world. 5 Grass invites us to reflect that we are a part of this web of life and that there are forces in nature that can intervene in our lives, which we are best served by knowing and respecting. By knowing nature, we come to know ourselves

12 oz. bottle. Aroma of juniper, grass, spice, mild smoke, some pepper, some earth. Definitely a different smell. Lots of pine and floral notes as well. Flavor of grass, pine, strong juniper. Very earthy. This is a quite different ale. It’s nice, though. Medium body, lively carbonation. This is certainly different. Interesting stuff here, guys.

From the bottle this pours a somewhat hazy amber body topped by a combination creamy/rocky eggshell head... a well sustained head at that. In the aroma, the hops are secondary to the spices and herbs, the blending giving a dry grassiness, pine, some floral, and a light dab of citrus. The malt, soft caramel, gives a good base on which to merge all the interesting tastes from the complex (but not heavy handed) mixture of spices, herbs, and hops that works in a peculiarly satisfying way. The finish is dry and spicy. This is a well developed and carefully brewed beer that will assuredly be repeated.

Bottle: Slightly cloudy amber with a large, frothy, vanilla head. Peppery, citrus aroma. Flavour is a strange, creamy blend of herbs, spice, grass and citrics... Different, but very tasty.

Bottle: pours a lot darker than I anticipated... A deep, almost coppery orange with a big, thick foamy light sand colored head. Aromas are mostly citrus but some grass and earhy spices too. The taste is a bit of a letdown, the hops lose out to the heavy malt flavors, and the spices don’t really go anywhere... Mediocre beer.

Spicy, hoppy, yet quite soothing with an almost chamomile like quality. But the bigger question is how does an obscure local like this end up on the list at the Airport Hilton with the big boys?

On tap, poured into a shaker. A juniper / spruce, woodsy note is fairly predominant on the nose, accompanied by a sweet watermelon and bubblegum combination. There’s also some grass and floral notes in the background. It pours a hazy orange amber with a creamy looking head. An abundant, sheet of head layers the glass, and the head reduces down to a light froth, almost cirrus cloud like, atop the beer. A medium / medium-light sweetness combines with a dry, spicy medium-light bitterness at the finish. Lots of soft carbonation give the medium-bodied beer a creamy-ish texture (maybe a bit of an oily quality). The sweet bubblegum body finishes dry, and clean, with a bright juniper flourish. The aftertaste turns back to the bubblegum notes with a touch of resin dryness.

A thick American ale, with some raw, grass flavors that seem to match the name well. Nice head and cloudy amber.

Nice thick off-white head very nice lacing. Very hazy orange color. Smells grassy and skunky like weed, actually pretty good. flavors of cinnamon, pine, ginger, orange peel and a little syrupy. A better than average beer but not anything spectacular. The smell got me excited but it didn’t deliver on the flavor. its worth a shot though.

Bottle shared by hopicide, thanks for the opportunity Todd! Hazy golden color with a huge coriander and other spice aroma. Sweet malty with a spice edge to the flavor. Interesting beer, but a bit high on the spice scale for my tastes.
