Oaxacan-Style Dark Ale brewed with piloncillo sugar and chile ancho. 5 Vulture is a deep amber-colored ale with complex caramel aromas with toasted sugar notes and a long, elegant spicy finish. Roasted ancho chile is used to add depth and complexity, without adding heat or strong chile flavors.

State and Lake, Chicago tap: pours dark brown with a beige head. Aroma is light chocolate and pepper. Chili taste is not very light in there, and this is not spicy as some beers are, but the flavor is there. Mostly a malty beer that is moderately sweet. Not bad.

Single bottle from mix pack. Pours a hazy reddish-brown, very thin, soapy head. Aroma of chocolate, yeast, a little vanilla extract. Flavor is very sweet up front, but backs off to something a little more balanced. Pepper component is there in taste, but doesn’t add any spice. Approach it like a brown ale and you’ll probably enjoy it.

Draft at Gino’s East on Dearborn. Amber brown pour. Aroma is roasty malts and a bit of earthy chili. Dry, thin, notes of dried chili, coffee, charred wood. Hollow, dry finish. Lacks depth and body. Could use more malt character. Reminiscent of a dry Irish stout.

sample at mondial de la bière 2015 - mtl. unclear dark golden with a small off-white cap, some retention and lacing. spicy burnt caramel maltiness, spicy chilies - fresh but still leaving a vegetal matter taste; lightly smoked red berries, salt and other minerals. light carbonation, light body, semi-sweet spicy chili-tingling finish. not chili overdone but unilayered burnt caramel. o-k.

AROMA - very light Belgian scent. Not too much else. APPEARANCE - very light golden color, totally clear with light head. TASTE - hints of Belgian flavor, but overall a pretty weak offering even for a blonde.
