2.5 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 10/20
12 oz bottle poured into a shaker. Initially smells doughy with a twist of lemon. It pours a dark, rich cola color with a thin off-white head that recedes quickly - sparse lacing remains on the surface. it’s heavily sweet, medium bitter, and lightly sour. Starts out with a thin, lime-like flavor, kinda like a corona or dos equis with a lime wedge, which quickly gives way to some of the smoother, sour malt. The "chili" flavoring comes in late and light; very subtle. It’s a unique concept, and I can’t really say it was done right or wrong. Probably a good session beer - light enough to drink without feeling full, with nothing overwhelming that might turn-off an average beer drinker - and the spice adds a decent conversation starter. If given the options between mass produced domestic beers and this one, I’d probably grab for this one, but it doesn’t really strike my fancy; tough decision if stuck between a dos equis dark or this one.

pours hazy amber. fruity and sweet caramel and bread aromas with some toast. Flavor is odd fruity qualities mixed with some light spice and sweet caramels. Body is medium thin and lightly carbed. Kinda underwhelming and you can’t really tell where they are wanting to go with this one.

1.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 3/20
Once the left over flavor of the coffee porter I had before this wore off, this beer became aggressively unpleasant. Tart, hot, and spicy. It tasted the way you feel on the can after a long night of funky beers....

12oz bottle from the cousin in the barrio. Pours brown in this dark room with light head that disappears completely. Nose is cola and spicy with pepper. Sip accentuates the pepper presence but no discernible heat. Sweet for the style. Sugar, caramel and cinnamon for sure. A nice surprise.

4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
12oz bottle with no date but purchased at Trader Joe’s, so hopefully pretty fresh. Pours with a medium sized head into an old school Hoegaarden tulip glass. Head fades to a thick tan surface covering lacing. Color is a beautiful dark ruby chestnut. Aroma first presents the ancho chile but without the burn, actual just a dry pepper aroma. Its not strong, just moderate and the first element to present itself. Behind that is just a great clean beer with soft caramel malt sweetness (not sugar). Earthy, clean, and sweet - almost perfect. Nice medium light but felt body with a perfectly melded carbonation. Flavor seems to lose all pepper and ends up with the clean sweet and earthy character. Pretty wonderful as well. Just a damn well made beer with a bit of ancho character on the nose.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
12oz bottle. Amber-brown body, respectable beige head. Big fruity ancho pepper aroma, coupled with some mild caramel chocolate. An interesting enough beer, sort of a Schwarz with some mild pepper tones. Not really balanced though, kind of a mess. Worthy of a tick, but probably not one to seek out.
