Oaxacan-Style Dark Ale brewed with piloncillo sugar and chile ancho. 5 Vulture is a deep amber-colored ale with complex caramel aromas with toasted sugar notes and a long, elegant spicy finish. Roasted ancho chile is used to add depth and complexity, without adding heat or strong chile flavors.

Single bottle from mix pack. Pours a hazy reddish-brown, very thin, soapy head. Aroma of chocolate, yeast, a little vanilla extract. Flavor is very sweet up front, but backs off to something a little more balanced. Pepper component is there in taste, but doesnít add any spice. Approach it like a brown ale and youíll probably enjoy it.

Draft at Mariaís Party. Iíve been waiting months to try this and was sadly underwhelmed. Pours a reddish brown, clear, with minimal head that dissipates. Nose is lightly sweet, faint cocoa and just a hint of smoke. On taste, flavors are quite subtle. Slight warming, light smokey chiles. It could really use more depth of flavor here as it just seems undwhelming. Okay, but far from great.

On tap at Fountainhead. Pours dark murky brown with small head. Aromas of chocolate and caramel with some faint spices. Flavors of caramel, dark malts, chocolate, some earthy spices. Did not really pick up any of the heat or smoke I was hoping for. Bit disappointing.

Poured from 12 oz into shaker. Color was brown amber with a tan head. Aroma was caramel with the hint of spice that it was brewed with. Taste was malty follow with the chili spice but not over powering. The flavors are very balanced. The adds a nice zing but overall the beer is neither exciting or thrilling

Bottle from Caponeís. Pours clear dark brown with ruby edges and a 2-finger tan head. Nose is brown sugary malt, mild hops, earthiness, nuts. Tastes malty, with hops, vinous fruit, earthy chile as it warms. Unique, and the peppers emerge more late, and work pretty well with this.

Decent dark ale. Anchos are mild, add a nice fruity and dark tone. Not terrible.

12 oz bottle pours a clear brown/copper color with a decent beige head. Smells soapy. Aroma has chili, light caramel malts, with a touch of cocoa and perhaps some hops. Medium body with more spice than carbonation. Something interesting, local, and different, but Iím not sure if Iíll try it again.

Bottled. Poured deep garnety-amber with a tall, creamy, well-retained eggshell head. The aroma picked up toasted biscuits and rye bread with accents of sweet cocoa and toasty chiles.. too much sugar in the end for me. The flavor found sweet caramel and lesser cocoa at the core with toasted chilis and vanilla around.. finished with a pinch of peppers and raw, earthy sugar. Light-medium bodied and sweet on the palate.. the chilis helped interesting it up, but it was far from great.

Draft served in a pint glass at Bakersfield. Pours a deep, mostly clear amber color with a tiny off-white head. Aroma of caramel, toasted chocolate and brown sugar, dried leaves, and very mild ancho chiles. The flavor is the same. Light-bodied, with a malty, earthy mouthfeel that isnít spicy until late. Low-to-moderate carbonation. Went well enough with our Mexican food.
