COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A Belgian Strong Golden Ale, brewed with hibiscus flowers, ginger, thai palm sugar and local Chicago honey. Huitzi is a winter beer that doesn´t wallow in the dark cold days of this season. Like it’s namesake, the Aztec hummingbird god Huitzilopoctli who smashed the winter to allow the sun to return, Huitzi looks forward to the brighter promise of spring. We think of it as a winter cooler. As all our creations, this beer has it’s own Latin twist as it is brewed with flor de jamaica (hibiscus flower). The idea for this beer came when thinking about food and family gatherings. In Latin America, all family gatherings have something in common, “aguas frescas.” An agua fresca is fresh fruit or flowers diluted in water and (sometimes) sweetened. They are typically served at lunchtime in almost every restaurant in Mexico and Central America. The term means fresh water and their creativity and simplicity appeals to us. Aguas frescas represent a time with family, colleagues or friends as they gather and share a meal. A time to disconnect from the daily routine and enjoy food and conversation.

Interesting beer. Not a fan of sweeter bbelgian abbey styles but the interesting spice profile makes this one a worthwhile try. Ginger definitely shows through. A bit too much ethyl alcohol

On tap at hopleaf. Pour is slightly reddish brown. Flavor is very complex and rich maltiness with some spicy and sour notes in the finish. Really awesome complex beer.

On tap. Pour is reddish orange with a small off-white head. Aroma is of hibiscus flowers, roses, and tropical fruits. Flavor is quite fruity - pine needles, berries, ginger beer, honey, yeast. Alcohol is well hidden with medium carbonation.

Pours dark orange/murky ruby. Head dissipates fast. Smells of strawberry, yellow/golden apple, champagne. Hibiscus blooms on the palate first sip and blossoms throughout. Other flavors: pear, cider, sour cherry, weak malt, floral notes. Mouth-feel is light/medium with slight viscous/watered down honey textures. Overall gets 19 for being a stand out/different winter ale. A worthy addition to your spiced/sweet winter sippers. And the flavor variety won me over. Worth the 750ml bottle.

750 ml bottle shared by DrSilverworm. Pours a hazy orange peach amber color with zero head. The aroma and flavor have a berry fruitiness, citrus, lightly tart, floral, hibiscus, and some mild spices. Fairly soft, but a different spin on the holiday beer.

750 ml bottle shared by DrSilverworm- thanks, Chris! Pours a clear apple juice color with no head. Aroma of hibiscus and other floral, herbal notes, berries, leaves, honey, and ginger. Flavor of berry fruits, metal, sweet malts, and winter spices. Light-bodied, with a slick, metallic mouthfeel and low carbonation. Weird beer. Seemed promising and kind of fell flat eventually.

750ml bottle, from my local Kroger. Shared with local raters. Labeled 8.7%. Mostly hazy red / orange color. Minimal white ring of head. Few loose dots of lace. Nice strawberry, hibiscus, berry fruity nose. Lightly hoppy taste. Moderate sweet, medium-plus body. Kind of crisp carbonation. Lightly syrupy texture. Head fades to pretty much nothing. I like the combination of flavors, though, fruity and floral. A unique winter ale.

750 ml bottle to snifter (thanks DrSilverworm). Looks solid; a cloudy deep orange with thin white lacing. Smells and tastes solid too; some sweetness and spice. Nice on the palate with a touch of tartness. Enjoyable.

Sampled at an esbls. Clear light brown with minimal head. Floral notes in the aroma. That is also tasted with spices and alcohol. Grain and honey. Nice.

Sample at the Aficionado’s "Hidden Gems" beer tasting on 05/24/2013: Pours a hazy rosy-golden color with a medium off-white head that dissipates slowly. Partial rings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of tropical fruits, spices and malt. Medium to full body with a floral and herbal character and flavors of fruity yeast, malt and citrus. The finish is sweet with a fruity aftertaste. Decent overall.
