COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A Belgian Strong Golden Ale, brewed with hibiscus flowers, ginger, thai palm sugar and local Chicago honey. Huitzi is a winter beer that doesn´t wallow in the dark cold days of this season. Like it’s namesake, the Aztec hummingbird god Huitzilopoctli who smashed the winter to allow the sun to return, Huitzi looks forward to the brighter promise of spring. We think of it as a winter cooler. As all our creations, this beer has it’s own Latin twist as it is brewed with flor de jamaica (hibiscus flower). The idea for this beer came when thinking about food and family gatherings. In Latin America, all family gatherings have something in common, “aguas frescas.” An agua fresca is fresh fruit or flowers diluted in water and (sometimes) sweetened. They are typically served at lunchtime in almost every restaurant in Mexico and Central America. The term means fresh water and their creativity and simplicity appeals to us. Aguas frescas represent a time with family, colleagues or friends as they gather and share a meal. A time to disconnect from the daily routine and enjoy food and conversation.

Sampled at DLD 2013. It poured a deep golden color with a white head. The aroma was of light ginger notes, tart florals and a brown sugar note. The taste was of tartness from the hibiscus, light ginger spice and a touch of sweet alcohol. Very well done.

Thick orange pour at Sheffield. Tulip glass. Strong ass beer. Lemon grapefruit and sour taste. Not a fan of this this style. Ok

Overall, an alright brew, but one whose use of flowers and herbs and whatnot seems to detract from what could have been a decent BPA

This beer feels exceptionally well executed for me-- not that it’s THAT good, but it seems like it could have gone wrong so many different ways, yet it is really enjoyable, and doesn’t seemed forced, contrived or overflavored. I will note two distinct negatives in the aroma (lacking-- just nothing there) and a couple stray sour / stale notes that taste yeasty in a bad way. But all in all, some good interesting stuff here- I love the slight "sear" to the carbonation, and the dry, watery mouth feel. Normally wouldn’t be my thing, but with all this sweetness, it’s just what the beer needs. The sweetness is all ginger and honey and belgian sugar flavors. Nice balance and again the shocker is the clean dry finish. Definitely doesn’t taste like the 9% that it is, which is also a positive.

On tap and snifter served at Lunar Brewing Co., with a hazed, ruby/copper color, soft white, rapidly diminishing head foam, but a lasting quality to the ribbons & spots of lacing. The aroma was fruity, with light tartness, light floral hints, and noticeable spicing as ginger. A little less than medium bodied, with nice spritziness, the flavor expressed honey sweetness, cherry essence to the fruitiness, and smooth malt. A touch of soft creaminess played with the mouthfeel, while the texture was a bit syrupy. Refreshing, with surprisingly hidden abv, a non-cloying nature, but still a little too sweet as a Strong Ale for this palate.

750ms bottle pours a hazy pinkish orange color with a small off-white head and a bit of lacing. Aroma is unusual, with hibiscus, rosewater, tropical fruits, ginger, and some flowers. Taste is slightly sweet, but certainly not cloying. Alcohol is very well hidden; seems more like 6%than 9%. Body is medium with lively carbonation. This is the first beer from 5 Rabbit which has lived up to my expectations from this different, well-intentioned brewery.

750 ml bottle. Pours a weird reddish color with a small off white head. Aroma of hibiscus, rose water, herbal notes, some ivy and pine. Very interesting. Flavor of strong latin fruits, lots of hibiscus, pine, berries. Very interesting flavor. Medium bodied, lots of carbonation. Finishes fruity and earthy. This is an Interesting beer.

Tap @ Monk’s pub: Hazy golden hue with some coppery highlights, okay head and spotty lace. The aroma has a lovely combination of Belgian yeast esters of banana, clove, candi sugar and earthiness with some grassy and slight citric hops crossed by ginger ale and mother’s day flowers. There is a hint of soapy elements however, so knocked the score down slightly. The taste is wheaty, yeasty, sugary but not so much to make it cloy. An even handed hops and spice notes add complexity with just enough alcohol to cleanse the palate. Some random acidity starts to show as it warms. The mouth feel is smooth and refreshing which was a surprise. I liked this more than expected. 5 Rabbit redeemed themselves with this beer. So I will give other beers a taste when the opportunity presents itself.

On tap at the Bad Apple. Nose is grapefruit pineapple and nutmeg. Smells fantastic. Taste is a bit of a let down compared to the nose. A bit thin.
