3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 BBB63 (5022) - La Porte, Indiana, USA - MAY 19, 2012
Tap @ Monk’s pub: Hazy golden hue with some coppery highlights, okay head and spotty lace. The aroma has a lovely combination of Belgian yeast esters of banana, clove, candi sugar and earthiness with some grassy and slight citric hops crossed by ginger ale and mother’s day flowers. There is a hint of soapy elements however, so knocked the score down slightly. The taste is wheaty, yeasty, sugary but not so much to make it cloy. An even handed hops and spice notes add complexity with just enough alcohol to cleanse the palate. Some random acidity starts to show as it warms. The mouth feel is smooth and refreshing which was a surprise. I liked this more than expected. 5 Rabbit redeemed themselves with this beer. So I will give other beers a taste when the opportunity presents itself.

On tap at the Bad Apple. Nose is grapefruit pineapple and nutmeg. Smells fantastic. Taste is a bit of a let down compared to the nose. A bit thin.

On tap a Revolution. Pours a lightly hazed, deep gold, orange tinted body with a finger-width, creamy, beige head that dissipates slowly and leaves a nice lacing. Aroma has a light sweetness with soft florals giving off some lightly tart citruses and melon. A touch of ginger, hibiscus flowers, bready yeast, and a light brown sugar. Flavor is similar. Medium sweet bready malts up front with soft hibiscus flowers and floral fruits. Light citruses again giving off a hint of tartness and more melon fruits. A pinch of ginger and spice towards the end as the florals and bready sweetness grows. Finishes dry and clean with a bit of a flowery honey and a very lightly spiced, tad bit tart bitterness. Medium length aftertaste following a smooth and clean, medium body and a soft, moderate carbonation. Overall, another extremely well balanced and well put together 5 Rabbit beer. Flowery, soft, semi sweet bready malts, lightly spiced, and a subtle citrus tartness. I was a fan of this one.

Draft on tap at Maria’s (Chicago, IL). Finally got around to this one. Another beer from 5 Rabbit. Pours a rich golden pour, gentle haze, a bit darker with an orange tint or glow to it, striking, with a frothy brighter white head that cakes at a decent level, laces well, sticks around to my satisfaction. Aromas pitch a healthy nose, showing gentle sweetness, brown sugar, touches of florals, gentle earth, bready malts, fruity feel. Touches of ginger, gentle sweet and citrusy fruits mix in. Lively and fresh, not quite what I was expecting. Initial is medium bodied, offering a vibrant flavor up front, spice and earth, sweetness, citrus. Gentle tartness, florals, hibiscus. Touches of deeper sweetness, mellow ginger, bread dough. Middle offers a touch more sweetness, but hides the alcohol well. A vibrant flavor and mellow dryness finish it out. Well put together brew, offering several elements of sweetness, spice, dryness, and a faint tartness. Well done, ABV keeps out of the way. I liked this, but wouldn’t have expected myself to.

Draft at Winterbrew in Lincoln Square. This is easily the most characterful beer that I’ve had from 5Rabbit. Pours a mostly clear deep gold with a pinkish tint to it and a fluffy white head. The nose reminds me of agua de jamaica, as it shoulder. Light and subtle ginger notes, tart florals & a brown sugar note as well. Some faint alcohol. On tasting, it is really lovely. I like the balance of the sweet beer with the tartness from the hibiscus, light ginger spice and hint of sweet alcohol. Clean and fresh, very refreshing and the alcohol is actually pretty restrained, never would guess 9%, though it is noted. Really nice stuff.
