Trippels are a classic Belgian style of beer. They are gold in color, dangerously drinkable, yet are high in alcohol. We brew ours with Belgian Pilsner malt and a classic Belgian yeast which imparts spicy and fruity flavors during the fermentation. We then keg condition the beer, thus carbonating it naturally and adding notes of apple and pear. As we always say at the 5 - Drink Trippel, See Double, Act Single.

Crystal clear yellow/gold pour, white head. Aroma of white wine grapes, unripe stone fruit, sweet caramel malts, candy sugar. Flavor is sweet and yeasty with some stone fruit, golden raisins and grapes.

Bottle. Pours slightly unclear yellow with thinner head, yet sticky lacing. Smell is vibrant and light of honey sweetness, white wine and faint spice. Taste is light honey, floral, fruity, white grape, milky sweet, faint celery notes which could be confused as spiciness. I also tried a 1.5 year version noted as "old gnome". It was much more mellow and subdued, so I preferred it fresh. Overall, quite nice.

Appearance: Lightly hazed, golden-hued body with a scant, white head.

Smell: Sweet-scented notes of honey-enveloped pilsner malts with ripe fruit, a vague spice tone, and some noted alcohol.

Taste: Flavors of honey and powdered sugars accented pils malts, notably sweet, I must add. The brew is very quick to add a dense layer of warming alcohol. Continental hops, very modestly bitter. Fruity elements of white peaches and white wine. Drying on the back end, though some sweetness tries to poke out from the finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium-full body. Medium-light carbonation.

Overall: Fairly decent. Sweetness and alcoholic heat are the order of the day.

Sample at Westside brewpub. Comes clear gold with average white head. Aroma of malt, fruit and spice. Taste is malt, dark fruit, spice and yeast. Very nice.
