Firkin at the Wine/Food thing atop 5 Seasons West. Golden in color with a slight haze and muscadine matter dancing around. The muscadines come out in the aroma first but subside a the light maltiness follows. This beer was fairly dry and slightly sweet. The muscadines really are present and linger on the palate for a while. Very nice brew.

hazy dark yellow, frothy dirty white head, lots of drippy lace, light tart grapeskin in the aroma balances the light sweetness, creamy body, flavor is slightly sweet but balanced with a light grapeskin character, the bitterness is replaced by the grape character,

The Food and Wine event at the future home of 5 Seasons West was the secnod time that 5 Seasons Norh brewer brewed this beer and he said its likely to be brewed again. It’s basically a golden ale with muscadines (the domesticated version of the wild native north American grape). I have easy access to scuppernongs (the wild grape that muscadines were domesticated from) and have always wanted to make a scuppernong beer, but I’m wondering if I want to bother now. Apparently the muscadines aren’t a strong enough flavored fruit to really show up well in the final beer. There’s an initial whiff of wild grapes in the first sniff and sip, but this quickly fades to just a slightly fruitier version of a golden ale.
