Thanks to Crawford for this bottle. This is 1972 aged in a Jack Daniels barrel. Pours a deep mahogany brown with light only passing through the edges when held up to light, showing copper hints. There is a thick beige head that sits on top for the duration. Aroma is sweet sugary-coated plums and raisins with heavy whiskey notes, lots of vanilla, chocolate and candi sugar. Fruity esters throughout. Taste isn’t quite as impressive. It’s got an initial abrasive alcohol kick with the whiskey hitting hard. There is maybe even a hint of tart cherries as well. The underlying candi sugar and dark fruits aren’t as prominent as in the nose. Fnish is Jack and oak. Mouthfeel is light to medium bodied with good carbonation. Overall, a good beer, but not as good as most of the Crawford’s BA Belgians. I think the Jack barrel just doesn’t work as well with the Belgian Dark style as a regular oak or red wine barrel.
