COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Rather than simply darken up our current IPA, we decided several months ago to design an entirely new beer from the ground up. The beer features our Organic 2-Row base malt accented by additions of Crystal 60 and Weyermann Carafa III malts. This last grain is a special type of de-husked roasted barley imported from Germany that lends a charred black color and notes of roasted coffee and chicory without any tannic bitterness that would normally be contributed by the husks. The hop additions are many and generous, featuring Apollo, Horizon, and Nugget, clocking the beer in at 70 IBU. Over 22 pounds of Nugget hops were added directly to the fermenter in our first ever batch. The sum of these parts is a befuddling, beautiful beer with an ABV of 7%. Big juicy hop flavors meld with rich roasted malts to create distinctively delicious ale. Hop bitterness is significantly more aggressive than our normal IPA, providing an interesting departure from the hop “niceness” that is our norm, all in all, something worth savoring, though perhaps not for the faint of heart.

On tap at the Petrol Station. Pours a very dark brown with a small beige head that lasts awhile leaving good sticky lacing. The aroma is a raisin malt and light roast. Medium mouthfeel with a smoke and coffee flavor. Easy to drink hiding the alcohol well. A very good black IPA from 512.

Draft at the Gingerman plano. Pours deep dark red almost black with a medium tan head. The aromas are light chocolate, grass and maybe some bread. The mouthfeel is sticky, dry abs bitter with a heavy body. This was a nice beer. Cheers!

What amazing lacing on this beer... solid, tall, stretches straight to the top of this glass. Something’s holding it up, and it’s good. Black in color with a light/medium brown head. Roasted malt dominates the aroma, but the hops do manage balance the sweetness of the malts. It’s a delight in the mouth, with hops punching through the roasted malt just right. The finish almost reminds me of a stout, with really no trace of hops at this point. Weighted more like a porter,m but much easier to drink. When you want the feel of an IPA, but have a craving for malts, this is an excellent option. Very well brewed - a solid beer.

On tap. Pours black with rich tan head. Aroma of dark roasted malt and pine. Flavor is much the same and dry. Mouthfeel is medium-heavy body with medium-high carbonation. Over all, very solid brew and the hops do not outshine the dark roastiness. Good stuff!

On tap at the Plano Gingerman. The beer pours a dark brown to black color with a large tan head that sticks around until the beer is finished. The aroma is very nice. I get a nice mix of lightly roasted malts along with some pine and light citrus from the hops. The aroma is very balanced. The flavor is also very nice. I get quite a bit of caramel and roasted malt with some strong pine hop notes. The bitterness is about medium. The beer finishes very dry and is easy to drink. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.
