3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20 graham515 (536) - Houston, USA - MAR 21, 2011
Pours black into the glass with an off white head. Aroma is nice citrusy hops with a slight roast. Flavor is much the same. Unlike most black IPAs that I have tried this one had more roast from the grain that added a different bitterness dimension to the beer. Nicely done by the boys at 512.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 AndresTM (185) - Texas, USA - APR 13, 2012
Pungent aroma of grapefruit, tropical fruits, grass, and floral hops, complemented by a faint roasted malt presence. The taste is pinier and spicier than the nose portends, with some pepper and overall a considerable bite. Very natural-tasting, very powerful. The malt character is more subdued than I had expected. Make no mistake, this is an IPA first and foremost—and a good one at that.
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 decaturstevo (3669) - decatur, Tennessee, USA - MAR 20, 2012
Black brown pour with creamy tan head. Citrusy hops with some toasted malt and earthiness. Sweet burnt coffe resiny biter that grows. Medium bodied but foamy.

Black Gold.. And IPA with a strong Molasses finish. Awesome. It replaces the traditional hoppy finish with a really nice (but not thick) molasses taste. Very enjoyable.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 Sledutah (2141) - Utah, USA - MAR 2, 2012
On tap at the brewery during RBWG
Dark brown with a nice sized dark tan head and good lacing. Lots of roasted malts, pine, chocolate and grapefruit. A nice Bipa.
2.3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 9/20 GODiSSOUTHERN (189) - Virginia, USA - FEB 26, 2012
Disclaimer...I usually do not like this style of beer...for me this was not too much of an exception. The hop character is nice and grapefruity with some spice, but like a lot of black ipas, I find the roasted malt gives it a weird metallic note and takes away from the overall taste.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 drowland (3879) - Tallahassee, Florida, USA - FEB 25, 2012
2/25/12. On tap at the brewery during RBWG 2012. Black pour, moreso dark brown under the light, with a small tan head that fades. Light hop aroma with a bigger kick of roasted malts, coffee, etc. Roasted, light porter characteristics seem to dominate - roast, chocolate, a bit of acidity - followed by a touch of hoppiness. Not bad.
3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 KAggie97 (3283) - Ugly, Hot, and Humid Spring, Texas, USA - NOV 21, 2011
Tap at Ginger Man, Houston. Pours a deep, deep brown with a nice, off-white head and an aroma of roasty, light chocolate malt and roasted grapefruit. Flavor is aggressive roasted chocolate and nuts with grapefruit syrup. Average mouthfeel. Great beer.
3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 HopDropandRoll (6) - - AUG 27, 2011 does not count
As their description mentions, this is definitely not their standard IPA with some roasted malts thrown in. And, honestly, I think it would be a better beer if it were.
I still enjoyed this beer, but I thought of it more as a hoppy Porter than a Black IPA. Plenty of bittering hops, a decent amount of flavor hops, but not much in the aroma department.
Overall, a nicely made beer, but not what I look for in an a Black IPA
3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 deyholla (3522) - Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA - AUG 6, 2011
On tap at flying saucer Houston. Pour a clear deep brown with a khaki head that lasts throughout the beer and laces nicely. Aroma has a decent amount of roasted malt and pine hops. A bit clashing. Flavor begins with roasted malt and is joined by a bit of coffee and then pine in the finish.
