The (512) India Pale Ale is a big, aggressively dry hopped American IPA with smooth bitterness (~65 IBU) balanced by medium maltiness. 100% US malted grains, loads of hops, and great Austin water create an ale with apricot and vanilla aromatics that lure you in for more.

On tap at Freetail Brewpub SA(9Jan11)pours gold with a medium white head. Aroma and flavor are toast and biscuit malts, lots of pine hop character. Straight forward IPA but very fresh and delicious.

On tap at the Holy Grail. Poured glowing, amber/orange body topped with an ivory head that was very sticky and lasting, leaving nice lacing. Aromas of orange/tangerine into grapefruits, orange/melone sweetness. Flavors of piney hops, caramel sweetness, tangerine-based hops, floral and lightly fruity. Medium mouthfeel and a nice, lingering moderate bitter finish.

On tap at the Flying Saucer Houston. Hazy orange with a small but very persistent off-white head. The nose has lots of lemon/pineapple, along with some sweetness from malt. Hops are, of course, dominant in the flavor, providing a strong and sharp pineapple/citrusy bitterness throughout. A delicate malt sweetness helps to balance things out, but have no doubt that this is a hop-centered IPA. A little sticky on the palate with medium weight. Definitely a tasty IPA, and no obvious flaws to me in this one.

Enjoyed in the Dallas area while on business. Cask version. Aroma of rich malts, caramel, slight hops, might be skewered since its cask conditioned. Appearance huge white head, very cloudy gold. Taste more citrusy hops, I can sense more hops than malt but it tastes more like a hoppy APA than an IPA. Definite yeast presence, kind of doughy, I like it a lot but Iím not in love. Would definitely have again not conditioned.

On tap at Cedar Door in Austin. Pours hazy dark orange/amber with smallish head. Great nose shows lots of citrusy hops and a hint of apricot. Smells like itís gonna be malty as well. Taste is a bit overwhelmed with the sweet malt, but it still packs a nice mean bitter punch at the end. Palate feels a bit heavy.

On tap at the Gingerman in Fort Worth. Hazy amber pour with a nice head. Aroma is sweet, hoppy, lots of citrus, and maybe some melon. Taste is bitter up front followed by that same fruit goodness. Dry, hoppy finish.

Tap at Gingerman Dallas. Pours out a cloudy dark copper with a two finger off white head. Aroma is of pine, grapefruit, citrus and some light fruity notes. Taste is very complex with notes of nice bitter grapefruit, citrus, light pine and some tropical fruit hiding in there too. Definitely a solid IPA, not what Iíd be expecting from Texas.

A: The pour is a golden amber color with a big white head and some spotty lacing. S: A nice bit of sweet tropical fruits and citrus on the nose along with a substantial caramel malt base. A fair amount of grapefruit notes and subtle pine. T: The flavor tends toward the sweet side initially, mostly caramel and some brown sugar. The hops come shortly after and have a nice bitterness to them. Some slightly bitter and slightly sweet grapefruit, too. M: The body is medium with a moderate level of carbonation. Kind of heavy and chewy for an IPA. D: For a sweeter IPA, I found this one to actually be quite drinkable and enjoyable. A very nicely balanced beer.

Pours Murky orange probably due to the dry hopping. The aroma is of Pine and Grapefruit. Medium hop bitterness for an American IPA. Lingering bitter finish.
