COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
GABRIEL does not fit neatly into any beer style category. Best described as a PALE ALE or APA (Aotearoa Pale Ale!), GABRIEL is a straw to pale golden colour, with a sweet, biscuity malt base and, of course, a good dosing of New Zealand’s finest aromatic hops, giving an enticing aroma and flavour of gooseberry, citrus fruit and a hint of peach.

One of the best noses I’ve ever smelt on a beer, bread and orange and caramel and so inviting it begs you to have a sip. A pale yellow in the glass, fine bubbles and a thin head. Taste; more caramel, hints of toffee, and a pleasing sweetness finishing with a clean flick of bitter hops leaving a taste of marmalade. All in all a fantastic debut and a brewery I’ll be looking for in the future

On tap at Tonic Bar in Dunedin. My god, so bitter and citrusy. Lovely orange peel bitterness, caramel. Some sweet malt in the background with a floral of hop flavours. Some caramel/vanilla. Awesomely hoppy and bitter.

Draught at Creek Pizzeria, Blenheim. Pours golden with a white head that completely disappeared. Aroma of malt, honey, grapegruit, peach and gooseberry...how good are those kiwi hops. The flavour is biscuit, citrus, peach and honey. Medium bodied with a lingering bitterness in the finish. It’s different than the usual PA’s, I could drink a lot of this though.

On tap at Bar Edward. Pours golden with a thin white head. Strong, very nice aromas. Mainly vanilla, plenty of bready malt, orange peel hops. The hops come through strongly in the flavour, incredibly citric and bitter - like eating a fresh grapefruit. Bitterness is balanced by bready, peaty malt with some vanilla and sweetness. Very nice, possibly too bitter to have more than two pints in a row.

For me this was one of the standout beers of the Twsited Hop beerfest 2009. From the first nosing to the last drop, I got a most pleasant aroma and flavour of marmalade with Seville oranges. As I drank there was a warm toastiness and a hint of butter. While butteriness is indicative od diacytil in this case it adds to the overall english marmalade on vogels toast. Sex in a pint glass.
