India Pale Ale is an English beer style that originates from the British colonial period. This beer was hopped extra strong to survive the long sea voyage to India well, as hop was seen as particularly rich in natural preserving agents. In addition, the beer had been brewed with a higher original gravity to attract more alcohol, which of course had a preserving effect as well. Today, India Pale Ales, also called IPAs are not that strong anymore (usually 12.5° to 17° original gravity), but they are still about 5 times as much hopped. IPAs should not only taste but bitter, but have the rounded smell and aromatic taste of hops. To achieve the characteristic taste of the 7 Stern IPA, we only use American hops that give our beer its distinctive taste.

Tap @ brewpub, 04/04/14. Pours a light reddish amber with a good, yellowish-brown head. Aroma is citrus hoppiness. Taste is fairly yeast, some citrus which grows stronger as the flavor progresses. Dry, but not that bitter. Fairly strong on the malty breadiness. Good carbonation and fairly light in the mouth. A well-executed IPA though could use more bitterness.

Tap at the brewery. Aroma is hoppy, but lacks a bit of intensity IMO. I get fruity-resinous mix, as if citra-amarillo. Quite tempting. Lightly hazy reddish amber colour. Moderate duration of head. Taste is hoppy right from the beginning, although there is quite pronounced supporting caramel malt. The hops flavour however is not only harsh, but I would say completely inappropriate. It shows mostly earthy/grassy tart mouth-puckering quality. Tanninish vegetal matter. Definitely something wrong with this one.

Tapped at the brewpub on 21st December 2013. Brown hazy color, yet golden orange copper when flashlighted. Hoppy aroma and taste, however no American west coast style here. Typical english IPA. Hoppy finish. Refreshing. Overall quite tasty!

Draught @ 7Stern. Clear, amber colour, long-life small white head, caramel aroma, medium body, smooth fizziness, sweet caramel taste, tropical fruity and hoppy bitter palate. A drinking IPA.

Bottle. Light amber, hazy, small to average and mostly diminishing head. Moderate, malty and sweetish aroma, caramel, light tropical fruitiness and light hoppyness. Body is medium to full, malty and sweetish flavor, caramel and light fruitiness, light hoppyness. Finish is average, malty and sweetish, caramel and light fruitiness, light - some grapefruit hoppyness Quite malty and sweetish IPA, alcohol in the finish dries up the sweetness. Too sweet (and too little hoppyness) for me. For those who like sweet IPAs.

500ml bottle, best before 07.01.13, at tasting on 20 January 2013. Thanks to Scopey for sharing. 4.8% according to the bottle. My first Austrian IPA! Orangey colour. Quite dry. A bit thin. Also something a bit unclean here, maybe suggesting some infection. However, as is often the case with infected beers, I didn’t find that off-putting as others. Drinkable. Not much like an IPA though. Unfortunate, since the brewer deserves credit for giving it a go. Whether it would have been more IPA-like if the bottle had been in better shape I don’t know. I really need to get to Vienna to try it on home ground.
