COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Almost black and creamy, this dark lager represents the 19th century black lagers popular in many central European towns such as Prague. Roasted malts give it a toasty, slightly toffes’ taste with vanilla aromas but surprisingly little sweetness while hops are subtle and only present in the aftertaste.

Tap at the pub, dark brown pour with a beige head, sweet roast malt taste with notes of toffee and fruit, light sour/bitter finish but does not linger, not bad but I liked the Märzen a little bit better.

Deep brown with a small, tan lacy, lasting head. Smells of toasted malt, toffee, bitter, roasted malt, wood, and dark malt. Tastes of roast at first with nice toffee sweet centre and a liquorish. Dry, dark fruit finish. Some lingering toffee and roast. Medium oily body with soft carbonation. Nice with the meal and decently balanced.

Bottle, 05/04/14. Pours a dark reddish brown with a good, beige head. Aroma is light smoked bacon, some roastiness, some dark maltiness. Taste is darkly malty, light roast and light smoked bacon again. Some herbal flavor on the finish. Fairly light and decent carbonation. A well-made dunkel with the smoked bacon being a nice touch.

Tap at the brewery. Aroma is a bit mild, I get more caramel, less roasted. Clear dark amber-brown colour. Stable head. Taste goes in the same direction as aroma, with just a hint of coffee. Mostly sweet, caramelly. Decent, but the plain sweetness bores me very quickly. Moderate duration of finish, where a bit more of the roast shows itself.

Draught @ 7Stern. Clear, dark brown colour, short-life medium size off-white head, nice vanilla aroma, from medium to light body, smooth fizziness, sweet caramel taste, roasted palate without hops. A very well-balanced brew.

On tap at 7 Stern in Vienna .... this was OK. I love dunkels but found this to be a little dry in tongue feel and a little more malty/tobacco’ish than I prefer myself .. not bad but I probably would not buy again

Red brown with fluffy white head. Low aroma. Touch of rauch malt. Some ripe red fruit and milk chocolate. Fresh tasting but dull.

Tap at 7 Stern. It pours deep brown with a medium off-white head. The nose is diacetyl, buttered toast, toffee, roasted malt and wood. The taste is roasted malt, wood, leather, touch of dark fruit, some butter, smoke, charcoal and hint of toffee with a long, dry finish. Medium body and moderate, prickly carbonation. Pretty sub-standard and yet more diacetyl....

.5L mug at Siebensternbräu in Vienna. This "unfiltered and 100% natural" beer is a very dark, reddish brown with mahogany highlights. Durable tan head leaves very good, sticky lacing on the glass. Aroma: malt + sweet vanilla + light smoke M: full body with medium-light carbonation. Smooth T: Not sweet, except immediately upon hitting the tongue. Vanilla in the finish. Surprisingly little sweetness while hops are subtle and only clearly present in the aftertaste. O: excellent dunkle, even by Bavarian standards.
