Commercial Description:
What’s in a name really? The first time the Master Brewers at 75th Street Brewery sampled this beer, they realized that a simple or clever name would never do this beer justice. "Ex Desparatus, a votum pro spes" is a Belgian style pale ale that pours a dark copper color with an aroma of coriander, malt and a slight hint of yeast. The taste profile reveals a higher than normal carbonation followed by coriander and a touch of noble hops. A malty finish rounds out the taste to complete an ensemble several times more laudable than the name the brewers have chosen for it. Ex Desparatus, a votum pro spes... Out of desperation, a prayer for hope.

Sample at GABF 2007. Light amber in color with a medium white head. Seems light in body. Some mild orange flavors, but uninspiring. Finish is unusually dry.

Draft at the brewery. Malty, spicy and citric aroma, grainy, bready, doughy, peppery and lightly fruity, perhaps some faint mustiness. Clear medium copper color with a large-bubbled, lasting head and sheets of lace. Flavor profile is also lightly sweet and fruity, caramel and malt grains, blended with tangy fruits, spice, lemon and spicy, peppery, green hops, these mostly towards the finish. Hints of honey late. Mouthfeel is creamy, effervescent and smooth, body is medium. An interesting experiment for this brewer, seems more like something I’d expect from New Belgium.

GABF 2007. Not impressive. Clear yellow in the glass. Strong smell of yeast and diacytl; not appetizing at all. Mealy in the mouth, very grain forward in the sweetness and flavor (reminding me of a maibock). Corriander is faint in the weak finish.

On draft at the brewpub. Pours a clear copper, with a creamy off-white head. On the nose, I picked up coriander, caramel and yeasty banana. Medium-bodied and slick it finishes lightly bitter and dry. The flavor is toasty caramel malt, citrus, and Belgian yeast (including a faint banana/cloviness) followed by a light hop kick. It finishes mildly bitter and dry leaving you with yeasty banana after-burps. A nice beer.

I had another pint of this the other day. A much better beer now. I got lots of Belgian yeast character to go with some aggressive hops. A strong bitter finish. Lots of carbonation.

On draft at the brewpub
Dark copper, almost brown, with a white head. Light corriander and orange aromas. Some toasted malt character. Dish soap like aroma. Toasted malt flavor with some citrus. A touch of bitterness. I get the metallic aftertaste the Tim mentioned. Medium body. I had 2 pints. Don’t know if I’d have another.
